Jagged Core?

I was taking apart an old system and when I pulled the cpu out, I noticed that the edges of the core of my 1.4 Athlon Tbird were all jagged. Also, the imprint of the chip on the hs/f had the outline of what looked like a circuit board. Did this chip get too hot or something? I can't figure out why the core is chipped or jagged around the edges because I'm always careful of installation and removal of the hs.

This is strange because I've never seen this before. Most of the cpu cores are nice and straight and this one looks like it has erroded in a jagged pattern all around the core. What do you think caused this?

the cores of the old T-bird Athlons were pretty fragile, they used to chip and crack often if the HSF wasn't put on correctly or gently.

I've killed a few T-birds and Duron's back when I was selling those...I always hated putting the HSF on, especially larger heavier units, it always made that a bit hairy at times.

If your CPU only has a few tiny chips in it, it should still be fine...I rarely ever saw a T-bird that didn't at least have one chip 😛 around the edge of the core.

Thanks for the response. I've put a ton of hs/f on the socket A chips. This is the first time that I've ever noticed this happening before. I'm always careful installing it. What I think might've happened was that I put a little too much pressure on it trying to undo the clip on the hs. Maybe this along with some extra heat from the chip getting hot caused this? I never had the hs at an angle, so the downward pressure must've been what caused it. I don't know.

It works fine. It's just chipped now. I got a lot of use out of it, but it was a rare cpu. It was a 1.4 200fsb Tbird.
