Jagged Alliance - Back in Action

pontifex

Surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. Just saw it for pre-order on steam. Comes out this month supposedly.

Wonder if it will be any good? anyone heard anything about it?

Oooh, first Xenonauts and now this. Good news for those of us who like turn-based strategy games.

It's not turn based though, it uses something they call "Plan and go". From what I understand, it just auto pauses when you first see an enemy (or for other optional reasons, which can all be disabled and the game then becomes fully real time), then you fill up your mercs order queue, and when you unpause, everything plays out in real time. So to me, it just sounds like a convoluted RTS with a pause feature that is supposed to appease series fans.

:Edit:

I've been watching Dead State with a lot more hope, appears to have much more in common with jagged Alliance from a gameplay perspective.

There have been 3-4 other failed attempts at a Jagged Alliance 2 sequel so it's been the Duke Nukem Forever of turn-based tactical games. At this point I'm waiting for release and reviews before I buy it.

Hopefully the quality will be higher than DNF. The demo for that played like a second-rate shooter from 2004.

From the gameplay videos I've seen, it doesn't look like a bad game, just not like a real Jagged Alliance.

Silent Storm is probably the best clone out there, but it's become rather rare these days.

Its not the Jagged Alliance 3 the JA fans have been hoping for. Many don't even consider this a real JA game. I'll wait for some legit retail reviews before I touch it.

It looks closer to Syndicate to me, since it is a squad based RTS. However, I enjoyed Syndicate more than X-Com/Jagged Alliance anyway, so I might check this out.

What is also pissing off the JA fan base is that it is a remake of JA2 in a RTS mode. Like they couldn't come up with a new story line and country? I'm guessing they are doing this to see if how well people accept it and if it does well they'll do another.

I just don't understand why the Syndicate remake couldn't be like this. It even has destructable environments if the Steam video is right, which would be a nice take on Syndicate. Instead we have a seperate remake make a game in the playstyle of Syndicate (which has its own following), and alienates the fans of the actual game they are remaking. I dont' quite get it.

I am interested, placed a pre-order. I'll let you guys know how it is 🙂

I actually am not here as an original Jagged Alliance fan. In fact I only played the game very recently just to try it out. The reason I learned about Jagged Alliance was from another game, which unfortunately I dont remember what it was even called.

It was a turn based game where you are a mercenary leader and you get missions which you can send a team of mercenaries to. You hire them and buy equipment for them and then send them off. The combat felt alot like XCOM and I loved it. I wish I remembered what that game was called...

Anyway, when trying to find that game again I stumbled upon this one since it was similar.

First off Silent Storm was an excellent game in the veins of Jagged Alliance. And while I have been watching this as an upcoming Steam game, I am not sold that it will be at all good. The images and videos worry me, things look off in them and it is hard to explain.

I got the originals on steam sale a while back, put a few hours into them. While they were fun, it was tough to stay playing them.

I remember them being hella fun years ago when I played them.

Difficult in what way exactly? I'm curious.

its difficult, imo. there are a shit ton of bad guys in a small area.

I can kill the 3 at the bottom of the map without any problem but I can't seem to kill anyone else without completely stirring up the hornet's nest and having every single bad guy come after me.

I initially found the demo difficult with the seemingly overwhelming number of enemies, however on my second try I realized the AI are rather suicidal. I simply posted up around one of the pieces of cover outside the medical building, and killed the single man patrolling, that triggered basically every other man in and around that building to come charging around the corner in groups of 4 or 5, and be almost instantly killed. I was actually enjoying the game until I kept running into the same suicidal AI. If they fix the AI's intelligence, remove their ability to see through various forms of cover around the map, and a number of other smaller bugs and quirks I ran into, the game might be pretty fun. Certainly NOT a Jagged Alliance game though, not even close.

This, not-so-good news.

Haven't tried the demo yet myself, but I still have high hopes for this game...
It's worth a shot, but now that I gave it a bit more time, more problems seem to be showing up.

Your mercs seem to have problems shooting people at close range, and the chance to hit doesn't acknowledge the issue. I've snuck up behind stationary enemies within a few yards, and of course had a "certain to hit" rating for a head shot, but my merc will either miss entirely, or shoot them in the leg etc. I've saved before hand in these situations, and had to load the game half a dozen times moving my merc around until he finally properly executed the orders. In general there just seems to be issues with what the game tells you is going to happen, and what actually ends up happening. It really ruins the whole plan and go system.

finally beat the demo today. took me awhile. i ended up finding out about just getting a good position and waiting for the enemies to come through a funnel area and just take them out.

sometimes how the enemies can see and shoot you makes no sense. i have no line of sight but they have perfect los? bs.

I tried to play JA2 but couldn't get into it. I couldn't figure out how to do certain things in the game and the old graphics didn't help.

Not sure if I'll buy it or not. I might wait for a sale.

Damn it, this game is a FAIL! 🙁

I think the game looks great, the graphics are perfectly done, has a good JA2 feel to it, but that's where it stops. The combat is horrendous, this plan and go thing sounds interesting on paper but it really just doesn't work out very well.

Also I feel as if I'm behind good cover, yet once I'm spotted anyone can shoot me, I don't really get that, and perhaps that is hte most source of frustration.

I wish there was an option to turn this game into what JA2 was, a full fledged turn base tactica squad combat game, maybe someone can mod it 🙂

On their official forum, the dev's claim to have fixed the cover issue, but I'll believe it when I see it I guess. Such a basic thing should be impossible to miss this far into the development process.

Well at least it was a "bug" and not just bullets that can go around corners 🙂
