Jackson, Mississippi Trip... anyone been there?

Have a work trip to Jackson, Mississippi in April 2014. I'm from Canada and never been to that part of the USA.
-any info on places to go?
-good bars?
-good music?
-places to stay away from?
-good places to eat?
-is it safe to take public transit?

Any other useful information would be appreciated.

There is very little to do in Jackson. Best thing I could say to do is rent a car and go drive south. Take the Natchez Trace maybe. See backwoods MS. Jackson itself is nothing special.
