Hi all. I went and looked at a friends computer the other day who said it had recently slowed way way down on all tasks. So I get there ans check some things out : I ran a full system scan for virus's thru Norton and he was up to date and clean according to it.

I went to pcpitstop and did a full system test there. No viruses agn, everyhing chk'd out completey there except it mentioned something about the caching process on drive C (I forget the exact name at the moment) but I did go into the C drive, properties and followed their recommended fix. Well, when I went into the properties for C it was alrdy set to what they suggested I set it at so I just left it as it was.

I ran a chdsk and everything checked out fine. I thought it may be a heat issue and we took the side cover off and even put a 12" circular fan blowing into the case and it did not improve so that rules that out. The unit is a Gateway w\ a P4 2 ghz, 256 RAM XP Home Edition SP1 and no more than 6 months old.

He has not installed any new programs that may be interferring and it doesnt matter whether it is a program application or the internet they are all slow.

Now when I was there that night it ran slow for me the whole time I was doing all this, but he says that some times it will speed up and run normal but then it will slow back down to a crawl again.

Im baffled. It sounds like a virus but Norton nor PcPitstops virus scan picked up anything. The only thing I havent tryed was a Spybot or Adaware ck.... but the real kicker is why does it work at the speeds it should for a little bit and then will slow down? If it were a virus or a spyware deal it would run slow all the time it looks like.

If anyone has some ideas I will sure give them a shot because Im stumped.

Thx for any and all advice :)

install cpu usage monitoring software and see what service/program is hogging the cpu. also, check the services list to see if any are taking up more memory than they should.

Hi guys. What cpu usage utility do you recommend? He isnt using Norton System Works, just the Anti V. & of course he's set to auto update. I'll go back over there and try these 2 things. Just need some1 to drop a name or 2 of a cpu usuage utility.

Many thx!

You could defrag the drive, right click on the drive, and uncheck the box for indexing service. And given you had a fan blowing right in the open case it's hard to think it's clock throttling that's for certain. You can push down on the heatsink to make sure it's setaed completely and check that it's not clogged with dust. Since it's XP w/SP1, to check the CPU usage just hit crtl, alt, delete *good old 3 finger salute* and click on the performance tab to see what the percentage of usage is. you can use powertoys and XP anti-spy and config those, though I doubt they'll help with this kind of problem, they are good to have :)
