J & R Computing has been around for a long time, I think even before eCommerce hit it big. I used to receive their junk mail all the time, now I just receive SPAM e-mail instead. I tell ya it's much easier, cheaper and faster to filter SPAM than it is to throw away advertisements which land in your mail box.

They have a respectable 5.5 out of 7.0 ResellerRatings.com rating.

I bought from them 8 or so years ago, so they've been around awhile. They had pretty good prices from what I remember, and good customer service. If they're still like they were then then I'd have no problem buying from them again.

i just bought a lot of phototgraphy stuf from them (with flooz). i'd recommend them, but they're prices are a little steep (for the internet-savvy, anyway).

pretty good selection, but not all of the prices are great. some of them are rip offs if you dont do your shopping. but for the most part J&R is pretty nice catalog (for me it's a catalog :)

so far everyone is saying positive things about them...i'm probably going to go ahead and purchase from them sometime in the next couple of days...

i wanted to buy some home theater speakers and settled on the JBL NSP1 package, at the local best buy its $450, but at J & R its $300...currently they have free shipping on the item so its a good deal in my book...if any of you know a better place to buy the speakers please tell me :D

i go to the b&m since i went to HS around there. i have seen some of the sales people at pcexpo and the autoshow...

anyway, it's a good store. the prices are not great. there are SOME deals, but not much. they will match any reasonable price, and they will match less reasonable ones if you have an ad or a printout from reputable websites.

the only thing that sucks is probably the return policy, store credit... etc.

J&R is a NYC establishment. It's been around a long time. Very reputable and if you are a good haggler you can get good deals at the B&M.

I've bought alot of stereo stuff and PC components there through the years.

Mday, where did you go to HS? Stuy?

jonnyjack - wow that's the exact setup i was looking at. however if you can splurge a little more, you could get some better components for just a little more. the NSP1 setup comes w/ 4 N24 speakers and a N-Center center channel. check out www.audioreview.com on those components, the speakers are pretty good but look up the center channel, everyone says they wished they'd gotten the S-Center instead. jandr also sell the S-center, i decided i wanted to do it right, so i upped the N24 fronts to 2 N28s. that's 2 N28 fronts, 2 N24 rears, and an S-Center center channel. i think it's considerably better then the default NSP1 package for not a whole lot more. just my experience on it.

also, apparently the JBLs lack a certain bass which you need to fill up with a sub, were you planning on that as well? i'm planning to purchase my sound system from jandr using flooz to get the 20% off, that would make it the best price avail on the web.

Been around a while, right off Park Row downtown near City Hall. Prices are ok; service ok, too. Lotsa stuff; they rely on volume.

ZeroBurn: yeah i am planning to get a sub...i'm planning to get the Sony SW-M40...i have gone to the hometheaterforums and read a lot and people have paired the JBL's and the Sony sub together with great results...

i have a fairly small room and not a lot money left and i watch movies twice a month if that (i usually go to the theater)...so i think i'm just going to stick with the NSP1 package...i'm upgrading from the crap speakers i got for free when i bought my old receiver like 4 years ago...

so my home theater setup will consist of:
-----------
Yamaha 496 reeciver
Pioneer 525 DVD
JBL NSP1
Sony SW-M40 sub
Toshiba 36" TV

I used to go there every week when I lived in NYC, just to check out their video games and music sections. They're right there by the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge? Pretty close to City Hall and World Trade Center? It's kinda fuzzy since it's been a while, I moved to Dallas in 1990.

I bought from them a couple of times. Good service, shipped promptly. They will match prices very often(if match is reasonable).
