From an evolutionary standpoint, the whole reason why humans live much longer past child bearing than other animals is to be grandparents. This is because your offspring are more likely to produce their own offspring who produce offspring if you are still around to help them out. This is the basis of the active grandparent hypothesis. But it applies to old me too, of course JD didn't mention that.

Of course, we have grown past our evolutionary anchors long ago, and JD and his supporters don't believe in evolution either.

Seriously, though, WTF is it with conservative and being so hung up on growing the population?

Because god told them to be fruitful and multiply. They see it as a religious obligation. Plus they want to out grow the evil brown people with godly white people. Its why JD's marriage is a problem for these nuts. His kids count against the white race.

Maybe that is all it is, I just have a hard time believing that is all there is to it.

No idea. They just ignore vast chunks of the bible, I don't think the huge push to pop out as many babies as possible is just because a verse in genesis. Seems lower brain than that, but now sure.

Pumping out kids reinforces “traditional” gender roles. Keeps the woman busy at home. I think it is biblically based but more than just that one verse. I have known several of these families that pump out kid after kid, all have been really conservative religiously.

My partner's parents, they decided to "let God decide how many children they should have". Near as I can tell her dad didn't even really want to raise kids, and most of them grew up in a financially struggling household because taking care of 7 kids puts a lot of strain on the budget. Didn't help much as far as expanding Christianity since only 2 of them are still in the church.

I'd say that is quite a lot.

Believe me, they are all very, very worried that they are being "out bred" by the brown people. It's as ugly as it gets.

I doubt this is anything new. I'm sure the whities already here in the 1800s were terrified of the dirty Irish (who iirc were not considered "white", they were caricatured as apes etc) and later the Italians.

I've done my part, like JD, to "muddy the waters" so to speak. I have spawned two "hmm, not sure what those are" kids and it's great. So have some of my relatives--ironically, right-wingers but that's their problem to reconcile their own kids with a racist GOP.

One day we'll all be some shade of beige and then we'll find something else to shit on each other about (hopefully by then religion would be gone but I'm not optimistic)

Catholic family across the street while growing up in a big city had seven or eight kids. All stuffed into a typical 1 1/2 story city bungalow. Pop ran a big company, not sure of he owned it or not. Maybe. As far as I know, each one of the kids have had a major hand in the company, rising into senior management at one time or another.

That is definitely not why fundies want everyone else to pump out kids. Fundies and conservatives have wanted many kids since before the birth rate dropped like a rock. It probably really is just having it preached to them their whole lives.

Maybe not the actual fundamentalists but there is certainly a major vein of conservatism that wants to try and breed their way out of what they consider social and political decline. Same people love replacement theory bs and are hardcore anti-immigration. This is the part of their party people like Musk has found a home in which should be shocking to nobody.
 
John Oliver did a good story on JD Vance. At one point in JD's speech he went off on Harris saying she was happy and he then said this.

It seems common across almost all religions. The more extreme their version of the religion, the more children they have. True of Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims...

I'm not sure which way round it works - is the production of lots of children about maintaining the gender roles, or is the maintaining of the gender roles a means of producing as many children as possible?

And is it about the religion reproducing itself, by producing as many new believers as possible, or is it about race, or is it about individual narcissism (wanting to populate the world with mini-mes)?

With Catholicism at the institutional/ideological level it seems mostly the first of those, but when one looks at certain high-profile individuals (always males) it often seems like the last one.

Yep, same here. I was preached at for 15 years about how marriage and children were the only real way to honor god and spread his word. Aka expanding the church and their financial security (primarily), and reinforcing theocratic positions for the future

Why do people who do not live on farms (major labor requirements) have any need for more than 1 or 2 kids?
