I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone here knows how to fix it.

Problem:I purchased a Refurb IWill KK266 from newegg.com and yesterday I was trying to hook up my USB MS Intellimouse Explorer (big silver one) in the outer USB slot. It would flicker as if it had some power running to it, but not enough to keep it powered on successfully. I then shut down the computer, changed the USB connection to the inner slot and it worked great.

I'm wondering now, does that mean my outer slot is bad? If so...I'm going to return this motherboard to newegg and hopefully get a replacement. Before using the USB ports, I went into the BIOS and activated both ports under the Advanced Chipset Features.

Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

Strange dude... I've got the exact same combination (KK266-R and Intellimouse Explorer) and the only problem I had was it not working at all :) ....

but that was due to my daftedness in not turning the USB ports on. BUT I remember that it lit up briefly, and then went off, so check your USB ports are on the BIOS.

Otherwise I'm guessing your USB ports are screwed or the mouse cable is somehow severed (happens sometimes)

LMK how it goes.

Cheers,
Chris

I have that mouse and a KK266. I use the mouse in my PS/2 port and have no problems. I never could get that thing to work in a usb port. I couldn't get it to work on my celeron either. My friend has the same mouse as well and he couldn't get to work on any of his USB ports.

That is strange and you might have a defective port.

Same combo, no problem.

I did read once though that with the KK266 you should enable USB in BIOS before installing W98SE.

Don't know if true or not but worked for me.

You might try the USB filter. It fixes some problems with USB and the VIA chipset.

USB Filter

It's toward the bottom.

Although, since it works in one, but not the other, it may just be a bad port.

I ensured that I turned on both ports. I even tried turning one off and turning the other off.

I tried all the combinations you can think of :)

I think I have a bad port too...but I'll try that USB Filter. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I just got off the phone with the csr for newegg.com and he said if it is only the USB that is having problems...their standard procedure is to cover the charges to get it fixed locally.

Seeing how I don't know very many places that can fix this sort of problem, I suggested to him if they would cover me if I bought a USB "expansion"(?)? Since on my case, there are another 2 openings that can fit another 2 USB slots, I was wondering if there was a way to hook up two more USB ports.

I hope you understand what I'm talking about...but I'm not even sure of what this is called.

Can you please give me the proper name for adding 2 more USB ports to my computer and a place online where I could get it (does newegg have it?)

Thanks a ton!

[edit] the two new USB ports can be internal or even external [/edit]
