Hard to believe people are still posting so much rubbish about IVB. It is a solid step forwards from Sandy, which was already a pretty great product.

For some, but not for all. For enthusiasts going from 2600k at 5GHz to 3770K at 4.7GHz is NOT a solid step forwards, it's a sidegrade really.

If you are a linux user and dependent on Intel's iGPU for all your graphical needs, IVB is a "real upgrade".

On CPU side, the strong improvement in performance / watt is also a "real upgrade".

Assuming you get an Ivy with HD4000 graphics because HD2500 actually seems worse than HD2000. It has the same amount of 6 EU's but is clocked a bit lower. Main difference is DirectX 11 vs 10 which is not that relevant when it's only able to play old games.

This looks like a complete rip off from inetl, as usual. Sending drones and shills out to justify their ridiculous pricing is appalling. A $130 5800K is far and away the better option. Oh wait, the shiils have decided that noone games at these prices... well that's partially true, with inetl you can't, but with AMD you can. With a 4ghz quad core, Trinity will be more than fast enough.

This is pretty shady even from intel. These chips are like 2/3 the size so they should be 2/3 the price. Bump that up by $5 just to goose their margins and everyone still comes out way ahead. But what they are doing now is just throwing sales away. People will start buying AMD if intel keeps gouging like this.

I'm guessing that I could probably undervolt the i5 to get it in the right thermal range.

Fixed.

I realize what Intel says is the safe operating temperature limit for its CPUs. The idea of a component in my computer getting hot enough to cook hamburger meat is not something I'm comfortable with. :D

... You probably don't want to know what your car engine's operating temps are. :sneaky: Srsly though, gets so hot it is almost as if there's something on fire in there.

Does this mean the Sandy Bridge i3s will drop? I hope so.

Nope, they get EOL'd. Intel has no reason to drop prices if something becomes "outdated" because of motherboard compatibility. For instance a motherboard that can use a new PCIe graphics card or new SATA drive can still use an old PCIe graphics card or old SATA drive. A motherboard is stuck using whatever processors fit the pinout and the BIOS.

Since when have cpu's been priced according to their size?

And no, no one is going to leave Intel because you can't afford their brand new cpu.
