Next step: Try to use only the help documentation (that might as well be written in russian) to figure out how to change display resolution and refresh rate in the GUI. What a piece of crap!

Linux is a toy huh? I see...so THAT's why so many business are switching over to it. Linux has won in the server department and more and more people are switching to Linux for a desktop.

I would suggest that you don't generalize, because it makes you sound rather ignorant on such topics. And please, go visit www.linuxtoday.com someday...you might find out a few things.

I use both Linux and Sun Solaris at work. Windows? it couldn't cut it for me.

Changing the resolution in Mandrake for example is VERY easy, I'm sure even YOU could do it. Before you start making snide comments on linux, I would suggest you actually do some research on it.

What distro of Linux did you install?

Oh..and chances are gaim is already installed on your system if you did a full install.

easy way to check out.

go to kconsole (if in kde) and type "gaim&"

Gaim supports a ton of stuff via plugins...I'm connected to AIM, ICQ and MSN with it right now...it supports napster, irc, and some other stuff.

Are you trying to give me a big head here or something? :) Linux users help each other out. It's been that way from the start. As for trillian....I've heard it works, but I've never tried to get it to work. As for wine....wine is also installed on your system. type "wine" in the console just to check. To get wine to work with windows based applications do the following. Mount your windows partition to your linux os. this might already be done automacially depending how you installed the system. If you installed mandrake linux it did it automaically. If you installed Red hat....I'm not sure.

to mount a drive type in the following

#<-- the linux prompt

#mount /dev/hda1 (stands for your c drive typically) /mnt/directory you want to mount your windows partition to

onced mounted.

for example cd /mnt/win_c/trillion
#wine trillion

if you need further explanations please let me know. I don't know if I explained this very well.

I'd have to really have a bad need to use Linux in order to switch. and there are zero reasons as far as I can see for myself. it's more of a pain in the ass.. after running Win2K for a while now, I can't see how there could be a better OS out there...

So... Linux is a piece of crap because YOU can't figure something out? Think about this from a different perspective: Imagine your grandmother using Windows 2000 for the first time, and tell her to change the display resolution and refresh rate.

She'll be just as lost.

Don't think so? Let's see.. click on Start, then click on Settings. Select the Control Panel. Once that's open, double-click Display. Once the Display window is open, click on the Settings tab, and use the little slider bar to set the display resolution. Now what about the Refresh Rate? Oh yeah, have to click on the Advanced button, and then, once the Default Monitor and <video card> Properties window opens, click on the Monitor tab. Now, finally, she can select a refresh rate from a pull-down menu.

Yeah, that's real intuitive. Gee, you know what? What a piece of crap!

it's different....but a good different. I'm running a dual boot between win2k and mandrake (soon). It's just a little frustrating at first when you have NO IDEA whatsoever on what you're doing. KDE has a lot of similarities to windows, so it's not so hard, but kinda intimidating.

I'll be PMing you next week, when Mandrake 9.0 comes out :D (or maybe the week after, if RC3 comes out on monday)

I don't play games any more, so I'm gonna switch to mandrake when 9.0 comes out.

rpm -i filename is hard?

or maybe ytou were thinking of:
./Configure
make
make install

That's the real tough one.

BTW: At my work (gov't agency) we're not allowed to run windows servers for security reasons. They all run linux and solaris.

I started with Debian in 1997. Some people say that it's hard to use, but I don't understand that. The install is easy, it sets up fine, and it just works.

Give Debian a shot. I think you'll like it. I didn't like Red Hat when I tried it. Same with SuSE.

My dad started with Slackware for a home network we had before I moved. I dunno he still uses linux for everything, and has been for about 5 years. Is there anyway to boot a non primary hd, and make a linux partition without deleting all that I have?
