Hello all,

Very recently built system with:

New stuff:
Asus a7n8x deluxe
AMD 3000+ / 333mhz
Seagate 120gb SATA
Thermaltake 480w Silent Purepower
Kingston HyperX @ 2 x 512 PC3200

Exitsting stuff:
XP Home edition
Radeon 9700 pro all in wonder
TDK DVD burner
TDK VeloCD burner

O.K. here's the deal....systerm ran stable for a few days then whamo. Abrupt shutdowns/reboots, failed memory test at boot, windows crashes, failing to post....

My question is: Could a faulty CPU cause these type errors? I thought maybe motherboard, but now...

I rebuilt my old system using ONLY the new CPU and am now having some problems with it as well.

NOTE:
I've switched psu...(used my old 350w and new)
swapped motherboards (new and my old one)...
changed ram (and tested ram with memory testing software all good)
reinstalled xp
updated bios (have now used three different versions)

Sorry for long post...just need advice/ideas. Thanks.

You can try to up the Vcore, Vdimm, and Vdd progressively by a tad. If it's still unstable, it's the CPU.

I switched out a 1600+ for Tbred B 1700+. It made my PC blue screen a lot, but it worked again after I RMAd it.

I think it is PSU. I would put more than a 350 in there and a good one at that. An Antec 380 or true power 430 would be great. Even if that is not it, it is NOT a waste of money to have a good PSU.

Well, justalink tried both an old 350W and a Thermaltake 480W, so it's probably not the PSU that's causing problems.

Sorry I missed the thermaltake 480. But I NEVER seen a bad CPU out of the HUNDREDS of system I have built for people and repaired. Bad memory would be my next guess.

I've only owned 5 CPUs (PMMX 233, Tbird 1.0B, 1600+, 1700+ tbred, 2nd 1700+ tbred), and the 1st tbred was bad. Good thing the RMA wasn't too hard to do.

What kinds of problems do they have? I have a Radeon 8500 AIW and the Asus A7N8X Deluxe.

I'll try upping the volts...Understand that I am NOT a weathered overclocker or one that has a great deal of system knowledge. I have been learning quite a bit over the last year or so, which led me to try to troubleshoot on my own. I am currently back to my old 2200+ and my epox 8kha+. Will take a breather for a day or so, and try the new stuff again.

Just to recap....is it likely that increasing the various power settings could solve such problems? It sure would be great, and one more thing to add to my list of "hey I know how to fix that"....should the need arise again.

Thanks to Ionizer86 for the specific suggestion, and to all who responded.

temps are fine...air cooled using aeroflow cooler

idle cpu 34 --- loaded 47 +/- ( haven't hit 50 )
system 20's

good thought but no problem with temps...thanks though
