I've noticed an interesting trend in my computer usage.

As the title says I've noticed that as computers continue to get more and more powerful, my need for this power has gotten less and less.

For many years I was just like most people here, upgrading constantly always looking for bigger, better, faster.

Nowadays my home computer usage has almost flat-lined..

I don't game anymore.
I don't edit photos
I don't create any documents
No special apps I use on a regular basis.

Essentially if I've got a web browser, I've pretty much got everything I need.
Web mail, online docs, and general browsing.

In fact if it weren't for my iTunes library, there would be nothing tethering me to any one specific computer.. stick me on a 5 year old laptop and it wouldn't really affect me much..

Anyone else seeing this same trend?

Seems like you're just getting old.
And yes, that's an obvious trend. :p

When I was in college, I would upgrade my computer every 6 months. The moment I graduated from college, I stopped participating in the pissing race of seeing who got the fastest computer. I currently use a 5 year old P4 system.

I've done less gaming because there's been less money available to buy games, and less time available to kill playing them.

Want. College. To. End. Dammit.
Working full-time gave me so much more time. It sucks when I can think back to when I worked at Walmart, back when I had both time and money.
This college time had damn well better pay for itself.

Though when HL2: Ep3 comes out, I will make time for it, though that probably won't be for another 15 years.

The thing is, I don't even bother upgrading for games that much. I bought a midrange system and I can play the games I want to at an acceptable level. <shrug>

I'm 20 and I'm getting to that point. The only intensive things I do is extracting RARs and FLStudio.

I'm not into hardware nearly as I once was but I still use the computer just as much. I don't play quite as many games though, but I still do about every other day for an hour or so.

This is madness

Actually, ever since I got my iPhone I can sometimes go several days without a computer .(excluding at work).

You stream porn, right?

You bring up a good point, no where in the OP did he mention that he "doesn't watch porn anymore"

The title of the thread isn't "I've given up living!" ;)

I find there's a huge trend going towards "dumb terminal to server" type setups. Lot of stuff is web based and the back end is on a server somewhere. Most of my stuff at home is like that. Either web based, or in a VM which I VNC to. I don't game too much, mostly do programming. For big companies its also the ideal setup. Cheap low cost machines as workstations, and powerful expensive servers as a central point to manage. Someone's machine goes bad, swap it out and they're ready to work, troubleshoot the other machine offline with no time restraint.

Though that's in a perfect world. Being in IT I see so many bad setups like people who have really weird apps or specialized setups such as shared printers, that make the "thin client" approach defeated. Where I work lot of apps are even profile based where they'll only work under one profile. That's what happens when you outsource coding to some really crappy company.

things really haven't changed for me. I upgrade my computer about once every three years. When i do i build a computer one step behind bleeding edge and under $500. I used to be all about the best/fastest, but its not worth the money.

I think Colossus in my sig will last me quite some time, expecially considering the most demanding game i play is AoE3 and the like.

I had my first desktop PC for a good 4 years before I got my laptop and stopped using it. The most demanding thing I do is stream video from Hulu or wherever and do some work in PS or Illustrator.
