I've never seen an episode of Star Trek

I want to watch Star Trek to see what the big deal is. Should I just go for the very first season on DVD, or should I start with one of the movies or a more modern series?

First, separate the movies from the TV shows.

With TV shows, I'd say start with TNG. That's a lot to watch, right there, but it's a good place to start. Then you can move on to TOS which shouldn't take you long to finish. Then watch DS9. Voyager is retarded. With the exception of a few episodes like In a Mirror Darkly, I find Enterprise to be far too pop-culture for my taste. Not enough nerdy grizly acting. Seems light-in-the-loafers. 😉

With movies, just watch them in the order they were released.

TNG was mostly a story per eps. There were a few to be continued. DS9 had more of a overarching story line to it, though there were plenty fillers. So I would say start of with TNG if you're only watching one season.

Shut up! How can this be?

Forget it. Its something that must be cultivated during those very impressionable younger years when space exploration, star ships, weird aliens, futuristic technology, mystery, and suspense grab your attention more than bad acting, bad set and prop design, bad special effects, and absurd story progression.

The same age range that was required to become a die-hard fan of Dukes of Hazzard. i.e. you are so impressed by seeing cool cars jump stuff to even notice that the car's frame regularly breaks in half or separates from the body when landing, but in the very next shot looks to be in pristine condition.

TNG and DS9 are the only series worth watching, in my opinion. I'd even skip most of DS9 other than the start of season one to get familiar with the characters and their backstories, and then fast forward to the last two seasons. The interim DS9 episodes feature way too much boring Bajoran story crap. The first season of TNG is relatively weak as well, but still makes for some classic TV sci fi.

Movies-wise, watch Star Trek II, III, IV and VI. Those are all rather epic movies that even non-sci fi fans will enjoy.

And I liked Voyager. 😱

The only reason anyone liked Voyager was for 7of9. The increase of borg-related shows was cool, but those massive mammories were the only reason people paid attention to that burning trainwreck of a TV show.

I would say you need to watch TOS in order to appreciate some of the TNG episodes (with Spock, McCoy, and Scotty). Here would be my order for the TV series (which is the order they were released, incidentally):

TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise

The problem is that TOS is a little rough to get through. TNG is awesome (especially seasons 3-7), and DS9 is my favorite of all of them. By the time you are done with DS9, you'll be helplessly hooked.... There is no luke warm with Trek (that I've found). You'll either love it, or you will quit before you finish DS9. So, if you are hooked, then besides the fact that Voyager isn't that great, you'll watch it anyway. Besides, Voyager gets progressively better. By the time you hit season 4, its pretty good, and its all uphill from there. Enterprise is pretty good (except for season 3), and its all thats left.

Watch the movies in the order they were released. If you skip 3, 5, and 9, you'll be better for it. I personally don't like 4, but I think I'm the only person on the face of the planet with that opinion.

This is mostly true.

TNG was the best. I liked Enterprise over Voyager........ That's how bad Voyager sucked!

I have all 7 seasons/boxed dvd sets of TNG . Was thinking of trading them for a diff. tv type series or selling it outright. PM me if interested.

I'm praying they put them on Blu-ray. If they can put TOS on HDDVD, surely they can do this.

To the OP, you must start at the beginning. If you can find one, get a HDDVD player, and find TOS on HDDVD. WTF hasn't it been released on Blu-ray yet???

Another vote for TNG and DS9. I didn't really care much for some of the early episodes of TNG, they felt too much like the Original Series, which I really don't care for.

Episodes with Q are always fun.
Omnipotent and loving it. 😀

If you really want good Star Trek.. Start watching TNG at season 4.. if you really like the first episode or so, watch it in order from Season 1.. If you just barely like Season 4, then you probby need a friend to explain stuff to you - or you just won't like Star Trek..

TNG Seasons 1-3 were pretty rough compared to 4-7.. It's like the special effects, acting, costumes, makeup - everything.. just drastically improved with Season 4. However, the episodes in Seasons 1-3 were very well written.. it's just they look low budget compared to the rest.

A friend of mine said he tried watching episodes but just didn't get it.. And one day, after getting drunk, we started watching one and I started explaining everything to him - and then he all of a sudden got really into it. Any die-hard Trekkie sometimes doesn't realize that there's a lot you need to know to understand it.. I mean.. Data doesn't make any sense unless you happen to see an episode that mentions he's an Android.. Or that Jorde is blind.. Or that Counselor Troy can sense peoples' emotions.. etc..

TNG FTW, it was the best by far IMO. I never really liked DS9.. Call me crazy but it just felt too much like a soap opera.
