I've never owned a camcorder

I've only run into two types of camcorder owners:
1. Never use it.
2. Use it but never watch the movies.

90% are in category 1.

3. Just purchased a camcorder for a good deal but might return it due to #1.

As I was just telling RossMAN last weekend, I fall into category 1 for the most part with my camcorder, but since I've bought a nice compact point and shoot DSLR I've been using it to take a lot of videos (mostly of our cats 😱 ). It's nice and convenient - it sits right on my desk, and whenever anything interesting is happening (like the flood we had a few weeks back) I just grab it and start recording.

However, I know I'll take more videos when I have kids, and I'm glad my dad videotaped a lot of stuff when I was a kid, because it's fun to go back and watch videos of myself from 20 years ago.

Waste of F'ing money

Recording formats will have to deal with obsolescence.

Think about all the people that have VHs and ported everything to DVD. Now they need to rip those DVDs to what ??? avi files? Then when PCs are obsolete, then what? Gogmedia format?

Just take damned pictures, you'll actually use them.

After seeing your videos it got me thinking a better digicam is the way to go. It's small, fast, portable and instant. But damn my camcorder was just $259.

I would say just splurge on a digital camera and memory cards, I do have a hard drive based camcorder that I have used once, but it was a good deal at 30 GB camcorder for less than $200!

I have a Sony TRV31 or something. MiniDV that has lasted atleast 3 or 4 years now. Wonderful thing (back when Sony was still good I guess). I still use it, although not as much as I used to. I need to go through and download all of my tapes again.

If you do get a camera, do yourself a favor, and do not reuse tapes. Record them, and then store them. Oh, and start a good cataloging system right off the bat. It will help greatly later on.

IIRC, the longer video was compressed with Windows Movie Maker from 200 MB to 8 MB, and then it was no doubt compressed further by Youtube, so the video straight from the camera is even better than what you see there. As cheap as SD cards are, it's a good way to go unless you need to record for long periods of time continuously.

So all told, I have 6 cards totaling 9 GB. Plus the same amount in CF. 😛

I love cheap SD.

Which is why I pretty much avoid Sony, Fuji and Olympus products.
