I'm running a two year old build of win2k.
I do notice some performance lags lately, but that could be my old chip.

Should I defragment the drive?
I always dismissed it as a very "AOL user" thing to do, but maybe it can help my drive seek performance?

If so, what app should I use to defragment?
THANKS!

YES.

Limnited to AOL users? Hardly...

Use the One listed above in Windows..

Or try Perfect Disk, or Diskeeper.

Google it.

Depends on the OS tbh, and the File System. If it's 98/se, then hell yeah. Run it witht the Me version of defrag because it's 10 times quicker. If it's 2000 or Xp, then isn't AS important, but does speed up the find time on ur system. Worth a shot, and improved performance is never wrong.

I would actually consider NOT defragmenting an "AOL user" thing. For FAT32 systems, hell yeah it makes a difference. Not as much for NTFS, but still a good idea. Just schedule a task to defrag once a week or so late at night.

Yes, definitely defrag. I usually run one on my system once a month overnight. Also remember to clear out your browser cache every now and then. :D

And what is the best way to clear out the browser cache? Do you do it manually?

If you have enough RAM that you don't mind sparing 30MB of it for a RAMDisk, you can create one and move your Temporary Internet Files folder to it. Since a RAMDisk vanishes every time the system restarts, it guarantees your HDD isn't being cluttered with 5GB of teensy image files and icons :p Instructions are here if you want to try it. It's pretty easy.

I defragged my HD once and it froze, messing up my files. My Jimi Hendrix mp3s turned into sound clips from Star Wars Galactic Battelegrounds.

Yes, definitely. Not defragging is the type of thing an "AOL user" would do.

I'm afraid I still have never had a WinXP-based system in my care to try it on

I just tried it and it works for XP Pro. There is a version of ramdisk.inf that comes with the OS in Windows\inf, but it is not as good as the one mechBgon linked to. It shows a drive in My Computer now. Procedure follows.

Control Panel
Add Hardware
Choose 'Yes I have already connected the hardware.'
Add new hardware device (at the bottom)
Choose'Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)'
Show all devices
Click Have Disk... at the lower right
Browse to the folder where ramdisk.inf is located.
Once installed, restart the system.

how big is the HDD?

I installed my 2000jb yesterday and it came with a leaflet saying that Win2k defrag and scandisk should not be used....

which leads me to this question: How would you defrag a drive larger than 137 gigs?

True!
Most AOL users don't know what app to defragment their drives... LOL
