I've never asked anyone here for anything but here goes.

I never met Neysa but I have some friends who were very close to her and it breaks my heart to know that her 6 year old son is going to grow up without his Mother now. :'( She died on Sunday when a truck pulled out in front of her. She was riding a friend's motorcycle, wearing full gear at the time.

The outpouring of support from the local motorcycle community has been awesome.

Anyway, if anyone wants to donate to help the family it would be greatly appreciated.

im so sorry to hear of this loss.

as much i would love to learn to ride a motorcycle, you start to think when you have kids, it's just not worth the added risk.

So absolutely sad. My condolences.

She was hit when a 85 y/o pulled in front of her. I had a somewhat similar experience when a old grandma all of sudden pulled in front of me from a side street as if completely oblivious to traffic or concept of yielding. Fortunately I was only going 40 on a 35mph road but it forced me almost to a complete stop. The guy behind was slamming on his brakes and despite the tire squeal was able to stop in time. Maybe I'm bias against senior citizen drivers, but I simply don't trust them on the road.

🙁

as much as i'd love 2 wheels i just don't think it's for me. too many things outside of your control, and they will usually severely hurt you or kill you.

RIP

I was hit when I was a youngin', riding my bicycle (full right of way, I was doing everything correctly, etc.) when this old man (aged 75 or so) turned left and slammed into me, breaking my leg and giving me a nasty bump on the noggin. The examination concluded that he was still on the accelerator peddle when he hit me, in other words even after he slammed into me for a moment he had no idea what was going on.

I am of a firm belief that at a certain age they need to start re-testing old people to keep their drivers licenses. Age affects people differently; some people still have their full wits about them as an 80 year old, others are near blind and can't react worth a damn.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Problem is, old people vote. (Though, I think plenty of old people are rational enough to even agree with this.) But that leads to the problem of legislators who won't do the right thing because it would hurt their reelection chances.

Come to think of it, I can't see any reason not to require people to at least take a writing portion of the test once every few years (say 5 or 6 years) a couple months prior to renewing their license. Fail it, and you still have your license for a couple months while you remediate whatever it is that you don't know. (And get rid of the idiotic, meaningless questions. Instead, put questions on like the obvious "on an Interstate, when may you drive in the left lane?") Apparently, people don't know the answer to that one. (And, in my world, if you miss more than 2 questions, you fail. I don't want drivers on the road who don't know more than 1/3 of the rules.)

I saw a car pull out in front of me and the motorcycles next to me. I was worried about the motorcycle guy. I was hoping that time that the motorcyle had a rocket to shoot the car.

RIP to the rider.

Old drivers are a plague upon this world. There are reasons why you have to be 16 to drive, and there are even more reasons why you shouldn't be driving at 85.

This is exactly why I dont ride a motorcycle and my bike only on bike paths.

Same. You have to weigh the risks with the reward. At some point you have to think about more than yourself. I hope she had large life insurance for her child.

I agree with this. Paper & road test at least every 7-10 years regardless of age. It blows my mind how badly some people drive. And people die because of it.

When I hear avid motorcyclists use phrases such as "When you crash" as opposed to "If you crash", it's definitely not for me. I also have a 6yr old son, and am the sole provider in my family. I feel it would just be irresponsible to climb on a bike. Perhaps when I'm older and have less responsibilities I will reconsider.

agree 100000%, especially because by that age you should have the means to get a cab.

and im not worried about when im 85. by then, cars will be driving themselves.. i dont see any way they wont be.

Riding a motorcycle is a calculated risk.

When I was young, single, not supporting anyone I rode every single day, 30k+ miles per year.

Now that I have more responsibilities I'm not willing to take the risks, but it was well worth it when I did. IMHO a single mom should not be on a motorcycle.

This will never ever happen because old people vote. Most politicians could not care less about what is "right" or "safe", and will not touch anything that has to do with the elderly driving.

Does anyone know why the 85 year old man is not being charged with anything? She was on a paved road, had the right of way, etc.

You have to be a complete idiot to ride a motorcycle on public roads these days.

Last night I saw a cruiser with lights everywhere on it. On the sides, in the wheels, like 4 headlights, etc.. I was thinking if it's that fucking dangerous and you know it then wtf are you doing?

When I was 14, I was waiting at a 4-way stop on my 50cc Yamaha, and an 82-year-old man slammed into the car behind me at 45 MPH. The car behind me then slammed into me, and slammed me into the car in front. My scooter looked like a V, but somehow I escaped with only a bruised knee. If there wouldn't have been a car behind me, however, I would have died.

I completely agree with the age limits on driving, and hopefully one day something will be done.

Jules, that's a terrible story and I will do what I can to help.

Motorcycles are dangerous? I'm shocked.

Motocycles don't have to be dangerous if the people on the damn road knew how to fucking drive.

I'll never have a motorcycle because of idiots like this, but it's a damn shame because I'd love to have one.

Where my grandmother lives, she gets retested every year. She has to redo the vision and driving test, don't know about the written. The problem is though, her entire independence is dependent on being able to drive. Without the car, she would have to give up her home and most of her possessions to live in an assisted living place on a limited income. I'm all for with the elderly being given strict testing, but not outright banning. I don't know what I would do if I was of that age and unable to drive.

They need to ban assault motorcyles, especially.

I have a six year old... sad, sad story. 🙁 You take an extra risk on a motorcycle. You can be the best driver in the world, but sadly there are a lot of stupid drivers on the road with you.

If you don't have the ability to drive, then you shouldn't be driving. Whether that be alcohol, drugs, or losing sight / vision due to old age, the reasoning is the same.
