I don't know if its the games or me but I'm not as interested as I used to be also.

I did buy a PS3 a few weeks ago however and it has ressurected my interest quite a bit, but we'll see how long that lasts.

One thing I don't understand is why some people think reading a book or watching a movie is any different than playing a game. You can waste hours a day watching movies and its no different than playing a game. Games are hobbies just like anything else can be, and are just as much of a "waste of time"

It sucks away so much time and I feel like I could have done much better things with my time than sit there frittering away with games. I don't get much satisfaction from them. I'd rather be out gardening, reading or socializing with friends. Even listening to music and sipping a glass of wine and looking out the window feels more purposeful than being sucked into a game. I wasted a good year of my life playing CS:S for hours every day. I wish I could get that time back. I learned my lesson.

Same here, I used to waste months on end playing games and then woke up one day and decided it was time to take a break. Now that I?m older I find myself playing games less and less, only a few games catch my interest enough for me to sit and play them for an hour but even then I?ll way away feeling I could have used that time better.

Now I spend time taking photos, working on my car, tinkering with my paintball guns and other things that are way more fulfilling than video games. At the end of the day, no one really gives a hoot if you got three head shots in a row.

Video games are no more or less of a waste of time than what either of you are doing now. At the end of the day, no one really gives a hoot how well your car runs, how well you do at paintball, etc ;)
Ultimately it's about fulfillment, and if gaming doesn't fulfill you, that's fine. Just don't deride it as a waste of time simply because you no longer find it fulfilling.

It took me a while to learn the moderation you two are preaching, but I'm a much happier gamer now. Playing a couple of hours a week keeps me from feeling regret, and I tend to have more fun when I do play (I've been known to throw the mouse before:p).

I've been losing interest as well. The quality of games has been dropping significantly in the past few years. Some are nothing more than interactive movies (KotoR2), and others are all flash and little to no substance (Spore), with much less replay value than many of the classics. Several franchises have been all but destroyed by the move to the console with piss-poor ports to the PC (Deus Ex, Thief).

Occasionally we get a diamond in the rough (Portal), but the game is too short and still has no replay value. The move to MMORPGs doesn't help either, as I have no interest in those. The excessive DRM is also a buzzkill, which is why I have no interest in GTAIV despite loving the previous 3.

I'm 32. Definitely noticing since about the age of 30 that games interest me less these days.

It's in part due to the fact that with age you loose friends as they gain wives and games are more fun played against friends.

Most good games take more effort to get into most of the time and as you get older time for this is not there. Also any hobby gets boring if you've been at it long enough.

my ex wife and i had that discussion often. she thought i was wasting time playing games while she sat and watched soaps and lifetime movies all the time. at least i only played for an hour or so after kids were in bed.

i still play games, not a whole lot per day, or even every day of the week. ill also sit and watch a movie or cartoons with the kids, or go out and ride bikes, play catch or volleyball with the kids too. games dont rule my evening, but they are a fun way to kill time when i have it to kill.

I'm 31 and play video games, but not like I used to. I used to have all the consoles and play just about every genre. But these days I pretty much stick to RPG's on the computer, and I find myself playing a lot of older games from back in my video gaming prime. In fact just this morning before work I did a quick skirmish battle on C&C Red Alert. I remember many years back waiting for him to call into my Packard Bell 486 66Mhz PC and we'd skirmish. Ah memories.

They're just not getting any different or better than what I've played in the past, with the exception of graphics of course. Valve seems to be the only company that makes games that really catch my interest these days. I can't wait for HL2 EP3.

Exactly my thoughts.

I thought I was losing interest until I realized that this game that I'm playing is just like 45 other games I've played. It's not me!! It's the same ol' crap!

TF2 helped me get my gaming on again. Now I'm playing my first MMO (dungeons and dragons online) and am having a blast.

Waiting for Dragon Age, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, (Bioware's secret MMO project), and whatever else I'm not thinking of right now.

I think this is the magical age. All the guys I know around 30 started losing interest in gaming.

I honestly don't care if it happens to me. I play games because they are fun. When they stop becoming fun, I'll stop.

My UT clan is composed of members over 30. We have a few that are younger, but the average age is about 40. I think our oldest is 56. I'm much pickier about the games I play now. I used to play just about anything, but now I play maybe 1 or 2 new games per year. UT2k4 is my primary game, and the last games I got were OrangeBox and Bioshock.

I think the problem is video games are trying too hard in the wrong places. They all try too hard with things like the most realistic graphics rather than having a true "idea" or "story."

Well, I'm spending my former video game time working on a masters degree and completing a novel as well as expanding my garden into a major food production source that is already generating some small income on the side. By mid-summer, I'm going to have more veggies than I know what to do with.

Trust me, I'm not deriding video games. But some hobbies provide growth, literally and figuratively. When the power goes out, I'm not shut out of what I do with my time.

The best and most enduring games have excellent story and/or gameplay.
My favorite games of all time are nearly all RPGs that I still ocassionally replay.

I used to be addicted to video games.

Nowadays I am focusing on school (going back to do a pre-req during the intersession) and getting a new job. I also spend a lot of time with my GF and I volunteer as much as I can (Volunteer Medical First Responder....LOVE IT!)

I play video games once in a while, but not nearly as much as I used to.

Play the DS, duh! ;)

Although I imagine working on your masters or novel is probably a little more difficult without power, no? :p

I still play WoW...but that's more of a "have fun with the buddies without having to leave the house" thing.

I finished Fallout on the PS3 maybe 2 months ago. I've been searching for something to play and really didn't see a game that I wanted to drop another $40-$60 bucks on. Well....for $25 ended up picking up Sonic's Greatest Hits. One side of me says, "cool these are all the games that I really liked playing when I was younger" (Streets of Rage, Fantasy Star). But the other side says "great I bought a shiny new PS3 so I can play old arse Genesis games in HD".

I think some of the drop off in gaming with the 30's crowd is because there more important things to buy (especially around the house).

<---spent $1000 on a new washer/dryer set
