Pros:
The apps and games, and "oh it looks cool!"

Cons:
Dropped calls every single effin' day.

Battery life still sucks (sometimes apps don't close properly, and run and DRAIN the battery life within hours, i've had too many days where I'd run out of battery in 4-5 hours and iphone is dead)

Crashes way too many times.

Some crashes lead to the entire phone's data being lost, therefore, I have to backup everything again.

The stupid Backup/recovery doesn't backup any save-games or app-settings. I'm absolutely sick and tired of playing games only to have all my progress erased; sick and tired of re-entering app settings for the apps I have (vnc/ssh/etc..).

EFFIN' AUTO-BRIGHTNESS IS CRAP. WHO'S BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT THAT WHEN IT'S DARK, THE SCREEN GETS BRIGHTER, AND WHEN YOUR OUTSIDE IN THE SUN, THE SCREEN GETS DARKER. WTF????

ITUNES SUCKS.

all in all, feck you Apple. Give me another phone where I can vnc/ssh/play cool games/IM/vpn/be-a-workaholic with. If there is one, tell me which one :| :| :| :|

Sounds like you might have a bad phone? Mine is jailbroken (which adds to a bit of instability) and the last time I had to restore the phone was about 7 months ago. I've never had any data loss from an app crash. At most the phone locks up and I have to do a hard restart, but i've never lost any data. I also get lots of dropped calls, but I attribute that to shitty AT&T's network down here as my wife's RAZR, my dads SE, and my Mom's LG all drop calls just as often.

iTunes does indeed suck in Windows, but on Mac it runs like a champ. I agree about Auto-Brightness though, its wonky so I just leave it off.

Battery life is fine on mine, and some of my apps are known battery killers as they run all the time. The jailbroken apps I currently run that are nearly always active; Intelliscreen, SBSettings, ELert, Netatalk, SSH, LiveClock and LiveWeather.

On a rare day my battery will be dead by 10pm (usually take the phone off the charger at 8-9am), but it usually makes it till the next morning with a low battery alarm. I usually talk for an hour or so and use the phone another 2-3 total. The only times i've ever killed my battery super quick was when I was streaming video through uStream one day and another day after a few hours of streaming Pandora.

I can't. I assume it does because the safari app or the email app just destroys my battery life they hang for a bit. I'd assume it's closed (back to the home screen), but 2 hours later, my battery gets drained. Sometimes, I get paranoid and close email by holding the button for 5 seconds. Supposedly, that's the surefire way to close the program.

The reason why I say I get dropped calls is that all my coworkers have treo's and other phones. We ALL have AT&T. My bro has AT&T. they rarely get dropped calls. I get them every single day without fail. It would just go "beep beep beep.." with a "call failed" prompt on the phone with an option to call back at the bottom.

I do probably have a defective phone. I'll contact apple about it tomorrow then.

See if you can still upgrade phones. Go for a Blackberry or high end HTC. (Unlikely)
Wait it out. Did you get a one year or two year plan? I sincerely hope it was only one year. Two year plans are bad because often the quality of service will change a great deal in that time. Also, a buttload of new phones will be out in a year and you will be drooling over them.

I got a one year plan with Verizon and I am glad for it. I started off with a Blitz (which wasnt horrible) but within a month I had upgraded to the Env2 and then the Voyager. They wouldnt let me upgrade any more. Voyager has great features but crummy battery life and dies frequently. I've only got about 5 months left and then I will try something else.

Safari hasn't closed properly since the last update. When I notice my battery dying quicker than normal, I'll reboot the phone. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. I don't use the auto brightness, as I also think it's backwards.

You say it crashes all the time, but you backup instead of installing new. I would delete whatever apps you have on your pc, & do a full reset of the phone. Then I would download the apps again. It's possible that you have an app causing your issue. I had the same problem with Feeds.

As for your drop call issue, did you try changing your sim card? There was issues with some of the 3G sims at the beginning. If you've gotten a new phone already and still have drop calls, get a new sim.

The only way I find out is if my battery life drains faster than normal. When that happens, then I know that safari hasn't closed properly

I noticed it the next day after I upgraded to 2.2.1, as my battery life had a dramatic drop. I could get 6 hours before I went to 2.2.1, and couldn't make 4 after the update. It took awhile, because it wouldn't happen all of the time, but I narrowed it down to Safari. Like Dan, I notice the battery life draining faster than normal.

Doing the 5 second hold thing might also work, but I forget to do that most of the time when I quit Safari.:p

 Can you clarify that. What sort of usage flattens your battery in 4-6 hours?

If I use my iphone continuously (using an app that uses the 3G constantly), my phone will be dead within 5 hours without fail.

I can't think of another phone that would use 3G constantly and would last very long. While I agree the iphone has battery issues I think your expectations are a little high. 3G isn't a very efficient (power wise) technology period.

I dont want to get into a iphone/winmo flame war but I've got a HTC touch 3g and it lasts way longer than that. Under constant use its about double, and there are phones with much better batteries.

Maybe my usage is different but I'm pretty sure my battery life is a lot better.

Really? You can stream 3G data for 10 hours straight? So, for example, run Pandora for 10 hours straight?

Dunno, but I have used the web on it for about 7 hours on a quiet night shift and had some battery left.

You can get extended batteries as well.

I keyed in on the OP's use of the words "app that uses 3G constantly" to mean something like Pandora.

If the HTC Touch 3G really has a 100% improvement over the iPhone in terms of 3G power dissipation, I'm honestly impressed. The HTC Touch 3G has a 1.1Ah 3.6V battery - which is smaller than the iPhone's 1350mAh. 3G chipsets are notoriously power-hungry. In fact it wasn't until last year that 3G GSM chipset vendors (Infineon, TI, etc) started to get the power numbers for 3G to something below WiFi power numbers. And to this day, using WiFi is still not much worse in terms of current draw than using 3G to a nearby tower. 3G on CDMA (EVDO rev A) is usually even worse in terms of power dissipation (although the difference isn't huge). Usually the ability of a phone to stream 3G data is pretty close to the specification for it's 3G talk time - since streaming digitally converted voice data using 3G is pretty close in terms of power compared to streaming raw data.

That's exactly what I thought too, which is why I think the OP is expecting a bit too much out of it.

Yes, this is what I meant. I stream Pandora or Slacker radio, and might check email or take a call or three during that time. I keep wifi off, but leave bluetooth on. I got a little over 5 hours today, but I wasn't quite at a full charge when I started.

My Bold running 3G all work day, with calls, games, internet radio for 2 hours, browsing, GPS navigation and of course push email all day would get 12 hours max, sometimes as little as 8-9. I'm running a Storm now and that has a 1400mAh battery, so we'll see how that goes. I think the problem with that will be the cool touch games and such I'll have the screen on for longer, sapping battery life.

If you don't mind, if you still have the Bold, can you play the internet radio on it until it dies? I'm curious how it's battery compares to the iPhone, and thats the only thing that I can think of that should be equal on each.

I still have it, in fact i have two(!), but it's not on service and swapping BB's is a step I don't do for a day when on a corporate BES. Sorry!

The other thing is I killed one of my Bold batteries. Lucky I have three! I also have two Storm batteries, but not needed to swap unless i'm traveling and away from a charger for a couple of days.

Memory leaks could explain bad battery life and of course the bad stability. I know the iphones aren't famous for battery life, but most people can manage.
I think you got a bad apple. No pun intended :D

You sure about that? the phone's battery is rated at 6 hours 30 minutes of talk time. I would guess they're overestimating like all phone makers do. If you were using it for 7 hours on the web. That means the screen was on. I would have to imagine since the specs are for talk time, that would mean the screen is off. No way you're getting 7 hours with 3g on and the screen on too. Even with the extended battery that ain't gonna happen. I bet that phone gets 3 hours tops with the screen on. full color screen + 3g = dead battery quick on any phone.
