Hi people. I'm pretty new to this site but from reading the forum posts I see alot of poeple here know what theyre talking about.
So... I am going to be upgrading my pc in two weeks and would appreciate any suggestions as to what exactly is the best deal out there right now. I was leaning toward the thunderbird 1.2 but have heard of some mobo issues with it. I also saw a p3 933 which was comparably priced but wondered if it was comparably fast? I'm pretty much a gamer and have a decent vid-card for now so I'm just looking for the mobo, cpu, and 128ram........basically I have between $450 and $500. Thankz!

A 1.2 Ghz athlon would be faster then a P3 933.

They are some issues, but nothing a little research can help avoid. I would look at AMD website and see what MB they have on their recomended list. That is a good place to start.

$50 - 128MB CAS-2 Crucial Ram
$170 - T-Bird 1000, $232 T-Bird 1200
$150 - Raid Mobo, $120 w/o raid

That's $370 w/o shipping with the 1000.
$432 w/o shipping with the 1200.

I would personally suggest the Abit KT7A-Raid, I have also tried the Asus A7V133, but thats not so great, in my experience.

I think Adul has a lot of respect around here, but if you wait for something to get listed on AMD's site, it is my opinion you'll be getting yesterdays technology.

I have the Iwill KK266 motherboard @ a 200 fsb 1.2 Gig Tbird. The 200 fsb birds seem to have some capatability issues with most of the KT133A chipset boards like the KK266, but a 266 fsb Tbird would be tailor made for this board.

The other suggestion would be to confirm you have some really top notch memory. Crucial Rev 3...or something similar that will run the insane fsb speeds these new boards are hitting.

I have my birdy clocked @ 163 fsb, but the memory (Kingmax PC150) craps out at cas2 around 154. I run it cas3, cause it's stable....but cas2 at these speeds sure would be spiffy! :D

Go with the thunderbird 1.2ghz. Just make sure to do your research and pick the mobo carefully, to avoid the issues. I don't think there are any major issues though.. to get the pentium instead of the thunderbird.

I really like the t-bird 1.2g/266. I read around and it seeems like Iwill KK266 and the Abit KT7A-Raid are two of the best choices of mobos........ Does this sound correct?? Also know that I am not really an overclocker and dont intend to overclock. Oh Yeah , what would be th exact specs of that crucial ram c3??? if that's what it's called, lol!!! Thx

Go with the AMD Tbird also with Micron, Crucial, or Infineon 128 MB PC133 Ram.

i would personally get the MSI K7T - Turbo over the abit kt7a and asus a7v133..

MSI has some multiplier adjustment issues below 7 or 8 or something, but that's not a problem if u're getting a 1ghz+ cpu anyway....

the board is also cheaper and offers comparable features for tweaking and has a good layout...not to mention good stability...

tho i still consider the iwill kk266 the best kt133a board currently available..

and the best budget kt133a board the epox 8kta3....

Thats what I thought too, but I had planned on buying ddr crucial for the kk266 and found out it wasnt a ddr compatable board.
