Funny... I thought that the goal of modern financing was to convince naive people to take loans that they can't afford to pay back, and then sell those loans as bundled "high grade" securities to another group of naive people for a fat commission.

I guess that getting screwed is an important lesson to learn in a Finance major... since you'll need to get good at doing it to other people :)

Actually you are wrong on both counts. 'Brokers' were pushing the former, but really in a minority to all loans written. Most of the real banks/mortgage companies weren't doing that because they do not portfolio their loans (keep them).

In the latter statement these securitized offerings aren't big bucks short term, they are long term slow and steady investments.
