I did a search for lcd, came across a few good threads, but when I put the model # into pricewatch (such as the Planar or Hitachi versions that many of you suggest), there were few, if any, stores that carried it (that were registered with pricewatch).

Anyway, my question - I've got about $450 to spend on an LCD monitor. Which model should I get? Obviously I'd like one with a good response time, near 15ms if possible. And I think $450 could buy a nice 17" model, I'm definitely not looking to get anything smaller than 17". DVI would be a big plus, but not 100% necessary (I wont be upgrading my vid card for at least 6 months, and my current one doesn't have a DVI connection)

What would my fellow AT'ers suggest?

edit to alter my budget.. I definitely don't want to go over $450, and I definitely don't mind going under $450 :)

Um... Your only hope is a hyundai L70S. Fry's has it right now for 400-$100 in MIRs. Other than that, expect to spend at least $425 on a 17" 16ms LCD. BTW, search the hot deal forum?

sorry to burst your bubble but $350 won't buy you a half-decent 17inch LCD, probably with a high response time (30ms), no DVI, and crap warranty. maybe fork over $50 or more and you're in the league.

try looking for dell sales. but they are still more than $350 even after rebate.

maybe wait 2 years then you'll get a 17inch for $200

what's the response time on the 1800fp? I believe I remember reading somewhere on AT that the dell 17" lcd is actually a better monitor?

If you have a Sam's Club membership, check them out. On their site (samsclub.com) they have a 17" NEC with 16ms response for $396. No DVI though. They also have a Samsung and some cheaper models.

If you forgoe DVI then there are 17" models with the common 16ms panel (same source). BenQ, for one has been from $339 to $369 shipped for refurbished, new with rebates and new sans rebates recently. Likewise the NEC LCD1760V has been around that price with rebates recently (but expired now).

NEC 1760V is an excellent monitor with decent price. (16ms too!) But I were you, I would invest a bit more and get samsung 172T. I don't believe in advertized response time quite yet and I truly believe samsung lcds are far superior that those 16ms 17" LCDs.

I'll throw in another for the NEC 1760V/NX monitors. I'm running the NX using DVI and it looks great. I've read that using analog might actually give better results on this monitor sometimes, so you probably wouldn't lose much by saving some cash and going with the -V model instead ($419 at Newegg). I ran it briefly with analog before I got my DVI cable, and I didn't notice any earth-shattering differences when I switched over. I do some moderate gaming; none of the really super-high frame rate stuff, but from what I do play (mostly ghost recon and NWN) and watching DVDs, I haven't seen any kind of ghosting or trailing or anything to complain about.

I bought a used Hyndai L70A (with DVI) and it works great; and, even better, I bought it on this forum.
