I've figured out why the forums have lost their fun

As I've read threads over the past few days, I've noticed that many people feel the forums aren't what they used to be. true, babe threads aren't allowed anymore, and many of the disruptive members have been banned, but i think ive figured out why they forums just dont seem "fun" anymore. almost anytime anyone posts anything, they are shot down, flamed, b!tched at, or "REPOST!!" is screamed in their face. its a very threatening environment, and its understandable why there are 100k+ members, yet only a good 1-2000 people post regularly (if that many). ive always been a huge supporter of anandtech and the forums, but i think its time we all seriously evaluated the necessity of the off-topic forum. its degenerated almost into an aol chatroom, and almost all the other forums are near-abondoned. i think anandtech forums should be turned back into what it should be - a forum where newbies can get hardware/software info from people who know their stuff, and where people can discuss the latest hardware/software news.
thats all i can think of right now.

personally, i think it's because the mods have really tightened their grip on this forum, especially recently... and also there's alot of newer members desperate for attention that have totally ruined this place for everyone else and caused many of the older veterans to be put off and leave.

you see, as i have not posted any actual news event occuring in the world, or have just discovered some new link, there is nothing i am reposting except for merely an idea.

I'm pretty new here in your forums, though I've read the artcles on the main site for awhile now. I'm guilty of telling off a whiner or two in off topic, but I think the other forums are great and extemely interesting.
Most of my posts are hardware related, as I'm a junky of technology and several times I've been the chew toy of some body with a differing opinon. Not a big deal to me. Mostly just younger kids spouting off.
I have yet to feel unwelcome or like the forums are not fun by my own standards. It's like remembering the old days I suppose. Had to be there.

i also think that closing off-topic would increase population in all the other forums, as it seems the only forums you can get a reply from nowadays are OT or GH (and even GH is losing people)

right on. some posts are just filled with convos between a few people about their inside jokes. Or some are just 5000 people trying to overkill a joke (russian one). it has degraded somewhat...

I can't stand the repost police... pisses me off.. what's the big deal?
all it does is make the person feel like a fool, and for no good reason.

EAT SH!T REPOST POLICE.

Some people are repost national socialist party peeps, but the 5th time someone asks "what's the best MP3 encoder" in a month it's more efficient to show them some of the other threads and try to teach them about the magic of the search function.

As far as the forums "losing their fun," one reason is simply that once you've been here a year or more, some of the repetition becomes less interesting. Like network television where there are 20 stock scripts that get recycled for every new show: "Action Man is (gasp!) on trial for a murder he didn't commit!!" (or variation #2 the even more shocking ". . .that he wrongly thinks that he did commit!").

Every few weeks or so some person either here in OT, or in FI whines to high heaven about how the forums "ain't what they used to be."

If they only knew how much they sounded like little, cranky old men who can't stomach change...

Not only that, but I've seen people praise the banning of certain controversial members, then go on to say how boring or repetitive the forums have become. What they don't seem to realize is that some of those banned members were also the ones with the most interesting and thought provoking posts.

In short, be careful what you wish for... Most often it isn't what you'd thought it would be when it comes true.

I posted public whois information about the domain anandtech.com (contains Anand's home address) a few days ago and it was edited first.... then removed all together by the moderators. Yes, it was PUBLIC whois data that 100% of internet surfers can access. If they don't want people looking at it, why post it as the contact adddress for the damn domain?

I bitched at the ended of the post saying that they were being too harsh about editing publicly available data and they removed the post. This place really blows...

yet, I keep coming back. There are too many good people here to let the mods ruin it. This place is really starting to get rediculous when it comes to censorship....
