I've decided which AVR I want.

Wow that is one hefty receiver. It does everything!

Sorry I couldn't add anything more significant than that to this thread.

Honestly, I wouldn't get a high end receiver until they sort out the audio formats and HDMI standards (this one is HDMI 1.1...can it decode TrueHD, DTS HD MA, etc.?)

My next receiver is probably going to be seperates, so that I won't keep paying all that money on amps which aren't obsolete yet.

Ahh, its posts like this...they make me unable to purchase anything. I will research and research till my eyes bleed before buying anything and as soon as I see one detracting factor, all bets are off.

I've been trolling looking for A/V recommendations for months without ever pulling a trigger. The search continues. I'm looking for an ENTIRELY new setup, new TV, receiver, speakers, you name it. I have the money saved now, I just need to make the decisions. Ahh, decisions decisions...

Bleh, HDMI 1.1. You don't want that one. I hate to say it, but I'd wait a little bit. The reasons for going to HDMI 1.3 aren't all that compelling for most folks, but HDMI 1.2a does add quite a few nice features.

An AVR doesn't exist on its own - what have you got for the rest of your system?

Yes, normally I disagree with posts that always suggest waiting. But in this case, for the money you're spending, I suspect you will want full HDMI functionality.

If you were in the under $1000 range, I might suggest getting the best available. But you're not going to want to upgrade a $2000 receiver anytime soon, and if you're paying that much, then I would suspect that these high res audio formats are going to be important to you.

cheers!

The problem is that feature creep is part of the AV life. There is always going to be a new spec tomorrow that we NEED to upgrade to or I need to go up just ONE MORE model to get this fairly simple feature.

I'm not looking forward to HDMI 1.4 and whatever else is next. 😉

HDM 1.1 is fine for me. I won't have an HD disc player until well after the format war is over.

As long as the receiver can accept PCM over HDMI, many HD players can just convert the TrueHD or DTS HD MA to PCM without any loss of quality. For example, the PS3 can convert TrueHD and even SACD to uncompressed PCM and then send that information to a receiver through HDMI.

Yes, I do want that one. $500 more for the new chip HDMI units is a price I don't need to pony up after reading this AVS thread.

System:

Sammy 50"DLP
Progressive scan DVD player [upgrading to the Oppo 981]
Klipsch Herersy II/ProMedia combo speakers

I would still recomend the HD-A2 over the Oppo. you can get it for $249 + 5 Free HD DVDs in the mail which is roughly the same price as the Oppo. It is also an excellent upconverter.

You are right that you don't NEED a 1.3 AVR to get the new formats.

check out the pioneer elite vsx-84. im pretty sure that has ethernet. i also believe the yamaha rx-2700 has ethernet as well

I get every format now except DTS HD Master Audio 9which nothing decodes currently), by using a Panasonic BD10 and analog outs and Denon 3805. I love the receiver, but that doesn't mean I'd buy that receiver for $1200 today.

Everybody has different budgets and different needs...but generally speaking, I can't see paying $2000 for a receiver that isn't as future proof as possible.

w00t! $75 off coupon and free shipping. Thanks!

No problem.

Of course you can get it significantly cheaper if you go with an unauthorized reseller 😉

That's pretty risky as Denon has been known to deny warranty coverage if purchased form an unauthorized re-seller.

Yeah, that's why I just recommended Onecall to start 😉

Well, as long as he doesn't get a $300 Demon from the back of a White Van, i think he will be ok. 🙂

I would think most, if not all, manufacturers deny warranty coverage for unauthorized sales.

OP, at that price range, I'd start thinking about separates. Get a nice x00 Watt x 5 (or 7) power amp that wont need upgrading for a very long time, so that you can focus on the features set you really want in the preamp/processor.

In the meantime, a decent 200 Watt x 5 amp could be roughly 1600-1800$, you could just use your current receiver as pre/pro until you find a pre/pro that offers the features you need/want.
