I think there is a chance for him to pull it off and I'm rooting for him to do so.

While he maybe stubborn, he's not irredeemably stupid.

I don't think he's stupid per se, but very arrogant. If he brings half of that to the workplace then he's not going to be able to keep a position long enough to get anywhere, since no one will want to work with him.

And over a year of struggling here has not indicated any growth of humility and flexibility, so it seems like nothing but really crashing is going to effect appropriate change.

I've been driving a lot over the past few months. I think I've decided to get a 1989 BMW 325i/is. They're hard to find in great condition though... Especially with the way people fucking drive around here!

Hard though. Was considering a 2011 Mustang GT but people want $25k for them still even though they're five years old and new they're less than $40k.

The kbb private party on it is closer to $19k. You will NOT find one near that around here. Closest is this: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/5499240296.html Guy has a bunch more miles on it AND asks for $3k+ above blue book. The car is nearly 6 years old too!

I was considering it but I don't feel like spending $50k+ for a mustang. Spending <$5k for an old 325i seems good enough to me. I don't particularly want to spend a lot of money on a very quickly depreciating asset.

A 27 year old car is a depreciated asset, and probably a money pit.
If you're really pulling down a 100k a year you can certainly afford a good quality car. Save for a year and pay cash.

10 year old seems to be a magic number for a car in my experience. You get a car that is in generally good working order for under 5k, maybe put 1-2k into it per year and good to go. Get it rust proofed and it will put a couple more years on it or even more if it's not too rusted out to begin with.

Buying new is not worth it though, if you want new, just buy the last year's model at half the price. Though if you really actually are making 100k and that it's a permanent stable job, buy a Tesla. That's totally what I'd buy if I was rich.

but you already have:

a stupid car when living in, perhaps, the #1 city in the country where you 100% do not need a car. Even $100 on a car in SF is a stupid decision.

But then there is the trashcan, the vacuum cleaner, the stupid suits...basically everything else you claim to spend money on.

I like your style, but I think most of us are thinking the same thing.

100k is like the minimum wage in the tech areas out west.

Not to be an anandtech stuckup or something, but the COL in those areas is ridiculous. There isn't enough money in the world that could convince me to live in California long term.

I agree, pretty good advice.

The rust though is just the worst, I really like my cars to drive true and all but requires a suspension overhaul of the tie rods, bearings, alignment, etc if you want it to drive nice. I wouldn't hesitate to just replace the whole assembly honestly. Then you add on the likely timing belt and such and its easily 2-3k+. Potentially a muffler and such as they rust out at pretty regular intervals. etc. etc.

Speaking as someone who has had their suspension fail on them in an 11 year old car .
