I've been thinking about keeping a PC history file while I still can

I was thinking, you know at this point I've only been building computers for a few years, I can still easily recall all the parts I've ever owned, what I've swapped, upgraded, etc. Maybe I should write that down (or rather, type that out) while it's still fresh in my mind, and then add to it as time goes on. 10, 20, 30 years from now I can have a giant text file with every computer, part, and upgrade in it from my whole life.

Should I type that out and then keep it updated or no?

Everything in your computer now will be obsolete in 3 years, anyway. It's not like someone will seek your expertise on pci slots in fifty years or anything.

In 5000 years some anthropologist will be scratching his head wondering just what the hell is an A7N8X-X Rev 2.xx BIOS 1005...

Use a REAL file format to prove your nerdiness, not some lamer .txt

Write a MySQL/PHP app to keep track 😛

Edit: I do, but inadvertantly, it's part of my inventory tracking system.

as long as you also write down which color your rounded cables are! i keep cpu/gpu stickers on my case door as less extensive version of what you are talking about.

you should build a database ... with all the serial numbers of the parts too... and have it accessible & searchable via the web just for yourself.

If you actually give a crap about that 20 or 30 years from now, it will be a hint of how boring the past 20 or 30 years of your life have been.

You just described my system exactly.

Uhh, don't everybody here do that??? *looks around confused*

Okay thanks for the bashing guys. 😀

No, I admit it sounds kind of dumb, I just thought of it when I got home today and decided to post it.

I admit, it has no usefulness, just thought it'd be interesting to see a long time from now. Sort of like if you're a grown adult and you dig up a paper you wrote in third grade in your attic. :disgust: Um, well maybe not the exact same thing....but you get what I'm trying to say.

Okay I won't do such an unheard of thing. 🙂

Dude, do it. And also keep all the invoices on file. You'll be able to make hillarious fun of yourself for "spending so much on so little" when we have quantums.

it seems like a kind of cool idea and not much work, whynot go for it?

True it serves no real useful purpose, but it might be cool to look back on later, like a journal.

That's what I was thinking at first, but when you really think about it, I never would. Why? Because, if I updated it with every upgrade, I'd be looking at the file at least every few months. So I'd never forget past stuff, I'd see it as I'm scrolling around and stuff. Thus, it'd be unexciting to ever look at it.

If I made it and then abandoned it for a long time, then it might be cool to look at years from now, but that defeats one of the main points of doing it, to keep it updated.
