Just like in real life.

Gotta do the Scotty formula:

Always triple your estimates, that way you always look like a miracle worker.

How do you hire .25 people?😕

You don't. It's just a way of bookkeeping how much time is spent on a project. .25 of a person just means they spend about 10 hours a week on this project and the other 30 on something else.

Your boss is a putz. If h were smart, he'd have padded what you told him, just so he looks good when you guys get it done early and under budget. 😛

My old boss did that. He knew I was giving him "no b.s." estimates, so he'd pad them a bit. As long as my initial estimates were accurate, we always looked like heros.

Then there's my current boss... Here's an ACTUAL conversation from a few weeks ago:

"You're working on ABC, right?"
"Yes"
"Well, XYZ is also on the plate for the department, and we just lost a few people and we can't replace them at this point in time, so I'm going to need you to work some OT so we can get both done without pushing either one back."
"You're kidding, right?"

Obviously, being salaried has its perks... but I hate it when "free OT" is abused like that. If management can just renegotiate your hours at the drop of a hat, how about I walk into his office some day:

"Hey, you know what... my wife and I are in a bit of a 'crunch mode' right now. We can't plan for sh*t and we want everything under the sun, so for the next 6 - 8 months we're going to need you to pay me time and a half."
