I've been away from computers for one year

When I started college I set myself up with:
BH6 w/celery 300 oc'd to 450
Voodoo 2 12mb
128Mb Corshair cas2 pc100 SDRAM (1 dim)

Now 3 years later I'm stumped. I type and I play games that is all. I was tempted to go the PS2 route but REALLY want an X-Box. Becasue the X-Box is a year away I'm contemplating upgrading and playing PC games for a year. What could I do? I've been away from this for so long I don't know what route I can go.

Can I still get a processor that will work @ 100mhz on my slot one BH6?
What is the best price/performance video card?

Could I live with just a video card upgrade?

I have not played a game on the PC for well over a year but would like to explore my options. Most importantly what kind of money will I need to spend. Might it be worth it to me to wait for the PS2 to be in larger quantities in March?

if you want to do a cheap good upgrade you can probably keep that mobo, add a p2 450 or maybe a p3 450+ to it, keep the ram cuz its good, and get a good video card (does that have AGP?) like a geforce mx or radeon...or if pci then maybe a voodoo type (im nto a3dfx man so icant help there)

yes you could do just a vid card upgrade...all depends on if you have agp or not

hope this helps as a starting place im sure others will have more specific information to give you

You have a couple options.

For CPU, the simple upgrade is a Celeron2 566 which overclock nicely to 850MHz (100MHz bus). These can be had for around $70ish, plus you will need a slot adapter. Remember to flash BIOS to latest version.

For video, a Geforce2 MX is a great value at around $100-$150.

Hope this helps.

I've been looking at a 850 PIII at 100mhz fsb and mabie a geforse 2 either GTS or MX
The BH6 does have AGP but only 2x does that matter?
I remember reading the 1st reviews of the MX and most said that it was quite substandard hardware, has something changed since it's introduction?
I figure a 800+ and a geforse 2 will hold me over for a year untill X-box becomes a reality. Or... should I just wait for PS2 and skip expensive computer stuff?

Never skip the computer stuff, lol. I think the MX is a fine card but i'll never give up my GTS...
