We were managing our office pool over on Sportsline.com and I just went in to check my standings after today's games. I've been leading the whole way, but it's always a little uncomfortable when you're out front. Well according to my calculations, it looks like I've already won the pool 🙂 We're using the increasing-scale points system with no bonuses (except in the first round where you get a bonus for the seed number.) I think that's pretty much the most common system.
Anyway, I looked over our current standing and I'm currently at the top with 195 points after today. The next nearest competition is 180 points and a tight pack is grouped from there on down. All of those within striking distance have either lost too many of their Final Four (and points potential) or are picking some of the same teams I am so they can't make up enough ground. So for anybody who thinks the first round doesn't mean anything (I saw a ton of people saying that on sports forums) think twice. I had an excellent first round picking several major upsets and got a ton of bonus points as a result of the higher seed numbers to give me a huge lead out of the blocks. From there on my pickings were maybe slightly above average, but I nailed 3 out of 4 of my Final Four and didn't sustain too many damaging mispicks (where you lose points potential for multiple rounds) along the way.
The only bad thing is that not too many people at the office played this year. So my winnings won't be the same as they would have been in years past. Oh well. It'll still be nice to have a few extra bucks and now I can enjoy the tournament without caring as much about who wins (even though I'd still like to see Kansas or Oklahoma take it all.) 😀
