The Zune app for PC isn't that bad.

Except that it has like 37 songs.

itunes was awesome when it first came out. It is just bloated now. What sucks though is that itunes is actually among the easier to use mp3 to device transfer programs.

Nothing is easier than drag and drop. THAT is how they all should be able to fucntion.

The only experience I have with iTunes is when I had to install it to get quicktime. After which I promptly deleted it since it was basicly realplayer all over again. quicktime alternative ftw btw.

It's obvious that they didn't want you to plug your iPod/iPhone into your buddies computer and copy all your music to their HDD. They were most likely pressured by the recording industry rather than being a covert Jobs conspiracy.

Have fun with media under Android. You think you have it bad now...

Yea, drag and drop is so complicated...

But not to your player playa.
That's the problem. I don't want to have to "sync". I just want to drag and drop and go.

yea but with libraries, different playlists, that would be an issue.

and with it being tied to your itunes account, that would also be an issue.

at first i hated it until i got used to it. now i connect my ipod touch, itunes opens up, and i drag/drop onto itunes, just as i would onto a folder. then i decide if i want to take off any old videos or songs, and click sync.

it really is simple, i just think a lot of people don't want to learn how simple it is and would rather bitch about it and rip on apple because 'its not like windows'. it's funny because now the zune software is trying to ride off of itunes, but the zune software is garbage.

and fwiw, iTunes runs A LOT better natively on a Mac than it does on PC. I have a much less powerful Hackintosh laptop than my Windows based desktop, and itunes runs much smoother on my laptop than PC.

There are theories behind this too... that Apple intentionally makes iTunes run like crap on PC. So then common users think "Man my PC sucks... iTunes run soooooooo much better on a Mac. Macs are soooooooooo much better than PCs!!!"

Which, while I'm not conspiracy theorist, I wouldn't find too hard to believe.

Also, I miss IRCing.

Meanwhile some of us can just plug our mp3 players into a computer and run our music off it like an external harddrive, no need to install any software, and it can be used on any OS.

cookie?

i use my iPod Touch about 1% for music.

90% is for videos, and 9% is for apps.

i'll take the organization of iTunes + 1 or 2 more steps than the unorganization of dragging/dropping - 1 or 2 steps any day.

I thought so too, until I found out about the Smart Playlist feature in iTunes. Basically it lets you specify a set of criteria and it finds all songs that match. You can sync smart playlists to a device, and it'll automatically copy all of the necessary songs. So for instance I have a playlist that has all of the 80s music that I've rated 4 or 5 stars.

I'm pretty sure that's the reason why Apple doesn't do the filesystem thing with their iPods. We all realized a long time ago that a filesystem is a terrible way to organize music, but we didn't realize it. You can do the obvious - Artist/Album/Song, but what about genres? A relational database is the best way to organize music, and that's what iTunes does. Of course it uses the filesystem for storage, but you don't want to be moving stuff around in the filesystem without letting the DB know.

I have mine organized by genre
/music/genre/artist/album/track# - title

I can easily queue up just XYZ genre I want.
I understand that having a DB nad having the ability to sync and have "smart lists" makes sense. I completely get that. HOWEVER, that still does not explain why it can't ALSO just allow for drag and drop. The two are hardly mutually exclusive.

Same thing here when I reloaded Windows, but I just have an iPod, not an iPhone. All I had to do was enable disk usage on the iPod, and was able to transfer all my music.

You CAN drag and drop. You just can't do it from the Explorer.

ANd maybe someone with a Zune can correct (the most similar to the iPod player out there) but if I wipe my Windows drive and all my music, without first making a backup, and then think 'That's ok, I'll just pull it off my Zune, that's my backup' and try to hook it up, what will happen?

Because that is what the OP should be shitty about, not iTunes, iTunes didn't delete all his music without making a backup first.

mediamonkey is a great alternative to itunes. you can drag and drop your music to the ipod icon in it. you need the quicktime and itunes dll files but otherwise it's pretty self sufficient.
They should have video support soon enough too.

Drag and drop is awesome if you own a grand total of 5 songs.

You can add many 0s to the end of that for me.
I've managed for many years, over many different mp3 players and devices, creating 1000s of playlists for personal use and for radio shows using windows explorere, drag and drop and WMP (and Songbird on and off... I want to love this program, but I just can't).

The sky is blue and the grass is green. What else is new?

PS. This is why I buy music from Russia. A lot less hassle. Or Amazon if you prefer.

Seriously, you're better off just downloading it from the uh, Harbor, or Fight Club rather than "buying it" from Russia. AllofMP3.com, or whatever's replaced them today, don't necessarily have the legal right in Russia to be doing what they're doing anyways, it's a technicality. You think *any* of that money gets back to the artist or producer?

iTunes does in fact suck, but for the most part it handles 2k+ songs a lot better than I've seen other programs do it. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck for not properly supporting tags in any files other than .m4a (AAC or Apple Lossless) and other assorted fail.

I dont see why you people think the Russians are not fair to those fat cat greedy pig lawyers. You talk about freedom and the capitalist way, but when its found in Russia at an affordable price you people balk and throw hissy fits.

The Russians know lawyers are scum and pay them accordingly. Artists should be fine with .05 cents a song if its good enough. The cost of living is not that high in St. Petersburg. But if you are trying to make a Rolls Royce payment with your latest version of "Fuck the Police" I guess youre just SOL. And the same thing goes for your worthless lawyer.

I hope you're just prettending to be this stupid. I really hope.
You think the artists see even .05? They don't see a PENNY from those Russian sites.

Of course they do. The American lawyers have spread lies and FUD to convince you to cough up .99 cents for each and every copy. Baaaaah.
