iTunes+Quicktime makes windows lock up

Dustin H

Hi,
I am having a problem with Windows XP Professional locking up either at the welcome screen or right after my profile loads.
Here's what happened:
I was playing a game one night and the computer froze so I held the power button to shut it off. The next day Windows locked up at the welcome screen. After a couple tries, I got my profile to load, but a message said that some registry files were missing and were successfully recovered (something like that). Then it kept locking up right after my profile loaded. So then I tried a system restore and got the same message about the registry files. It still kept locking up so I tried a repair install. That fixed the locking up problem, but some of my programs didn't work (like Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player). Then I decided to reinstall Windows and start from scratch so a backed up as much stuff as I could and reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. After reinstalling all the drivers and software I am getting the same lock up problem as I started with. It didn't lock up during the installation of the software, but after a restart it did.
Does anybody have an idea to help me fix this?
I built this computer about half a year ago and it has worked well until now.

Motherboard: Asus A8N Sli-deluxe
CPU: AMD X2 4400+
RAM: Corsair Twin X PC 3200
Video: Sapphire ATI X800
HD: Maxtor 250gig
DVD Burner: Plextor PX 116A
DVD Player: Lite-On ??
PSU: Thermaltake silent purepower 480W
Case: Antec p160

Thank you for your help.

Hi there Dustin and welcome to the Technical Support section of the Anandtech Forums...

Dustin are you able to boot into safe mode or does the lockup issue still occur? if you are unsure how to access the boot menu, hit f8 while booting (before the Windows splash screen comes up) and you should be presented with the menu.

if you are able to get into safemode without locking up, I would initially advise running the System File Checker ... Start>Run>"sfc /scannow" .. and let Windows run a check on your system files.

Ohh yeah
I forgot to add that in safe mode it didn't lock up.
I am now going to try running the System File Checker.
Thanks for the help.

Ok,
I tried to run the System File Checker in safe mode, but the window just flashed and dissapeared and nothing happened. Then I tried to run it in normal mode a couple times, but it locks up too fast. One time it started checking and a message came up that said something like: "Windows needs some files for the DLL Cache. Please insert your Window XP professional CD." By the time I got the CD in, it locked up.
I also forgot to mention that I ran MemTest for one pass with no errors when I was trying to find out what is wrong with it.

I managed to do a system restore and it stopped locking up. Then I installed all the drivers. After that, I restarted and tryed to install my ipod nano. In the middle of the installation, it froze. I restarted and got the same lock up problems that I started with. After trying to do system restore multiple times with no success, I did a clean install again. This time I only installed the drivers for the motherboard and tried to install the ipod with my sisters older ipod installation disk. It installed, but didn't recognise my ipod. Then I tried my ipod cd and it locked up again. I restarted and tried loading songs to the ipod, (it recongnised it then) but it locked up. Right now the computer locks up, just not as fast as it used to. Now I am pretty sure that it is the ipod software that is causing the lockups. I've searched the internet, but is seems that nobody else is having the same problems with it.

Does anybody here have any ideas?
Thanks

you might want to edit your thread title to say that you suspect it might be an issue with the iPod. it might be the only way to draw attention to others that may have experienced or heard of the issue. sorry to hear it is still facked up.

I notice you have a Maxtor hdd. I had my new computer running with the new EVGA nForce4 SLI mb and maxtor diamondmax 10 hdd. One day it decides to freeze up and I had to do the same thing. I reinstalled windows, updated bios, and other various things several times. Windows will freeze on the loading sn, sometimes when it loads yoru profile, sometimes in Windows. Maxtor is having problems with the sata drivers and the nForce4 chipset so I believe that is your problem. I know you had the computer running, but so have others and then all of a sudden it didn't work. Sometimes you can just switch the SATA cable to a different port and it will work. I have installed my old WD ATA hd and my computer had no problems at all.

Ok, redrider I will try switching ports. Unfortunatly I don't have another hd around so I hope that works. I've been trying a lot of things and nothing works. It still only locks up after I install iTunes+Quicktime. I've reinstalled Windows at least 5 times now. This really sucks.
Thanks for the help.

Hey redrider,
I think that changing the SATA port solved the problem! I installed iTunes and Quicktime and it hasn't locked up yet. Hopefully it will keep working. Do you know anything else about this issue? I don't want it to get messed up again because it has been almost a month of troubleshooting and frustration. I am thinking about just getting a different hard drive.
