So the President of the college I work for might need to have his computer reformated.

He has 40 gigs of music on Itunes but not all of it is on the Ipod so I'd have to backup all of the music to a external drive and restore it on the fresh install...

Will he be able to connect his ipod and keep all of his music the way it is without having to go through all of his music and loading the ipod again?

I ask this because when my GF had to connect her shuffle or touch to a different computer it would say she has to basically start over... which is ridiculous...

I have no idea...but as long as you back up the music, I would explain to him that it's the best you can do and see what happens.

What platform are you on? OSX or XP or Vista? The answer and how to solve the problem is likely different for each platform.

Make sure to use the itunes backup function (i guess to dvds would be one option), then un-authorize his PC before reformatting. Re-install itunes, re-authorize, then restore from the DVDs. I have done this multiple times with no problems.

yup the itunes backup will do it for you, everything from library to playcount should be backed.
