ITunes quality question

Finally went looking around, and found some things I like. I would not be using an Ipod device, but burning a CD for my home theater, and sometimes putting them on my PDA.

How is the sound quality?

it is decent, as long as the material isn't too demanding. Classical might stick out like a sore thumb if it is demanding (see:carmen) but for simple beats such as techno, r&B, hiphop, and pop, it should be fine....

Then again I got Blur's "song 2" it the 128kbps is noticable....

EDIT:

In general, what suffers the most is "soundstage"

Is there a higher quality alternative to ITunes then?

I think the highest I've seen (for legal services) is 192, which is good, but VBR would be better. Too bad you can't download songs in the Apple lossless format (essentially the AAC).

AllOfMP3, but it's a gray area, legal-wise.

Week later bumpage....

So iTunes music is ONLY available in 128? What a rip off... looking for at least 192 or AAC. Is that AllOfMP3 thing safe, payment-wise?

....its not mp3. itunes uses the aac? or was that acc compression.. its a newer audio compression tech by the mpeg group. its more advanced so it is probably about comparable to 192kbs mp3 at 128kbs.

the quality is generally pretty damn good, there are only a few songs that i've downloaded that I wish were better. Apple Lossless would be pretty dumb simply because 1 song is about 25MB. High quality VBR MP3/AAC's are what I would like to see. I used to hate MP3s, but then i discovered EAC and LAME. WOW!!

ogg > mp3/aac... I'd also suggest lossless (though a more widely supported standard like flac - nobody uses apple lossless) - if you're paying full price, why not get the full data? If you want to compress it for a portable device or to your own varying preferences depending on genre / your interest, there's also nothing stopping you.

Sorry, it's just true... How many portable or pc software players natively support the two formats? In the case of apple lossless, only one of each...
