I've noticed that I've a couple of iTunes related processes running, even if I don't actually use iTunes. Is there any way that you can get these processes only to run when you are running iTunes and not any other time?

Do you have an iPod? Since I don't, I completely disable thed "iPodService" service and iTunes still works fine.

Uninstall iTunes and quicktime. Download and install a good player, such as foobar2000.

How about not telling people what kind of software they should like?

Ditto for BlueWeasel. Go and disable those services. It's rather unfriendly of Apple to have started them by default when a lot of people have no use for them.

Edit: clarification. I wasn't saying 'Ditto for BlueWeasel' on the not telling people what they should like. I just reread that and it looked a little bad

You're right, I should learn to be more tolerant. If you enjoy installing adware on your system, that's your perogative. I did, however, offer helpful advice. You only parroted someone else's.

 Whatever.

It's easy to install a minimal version of iTunes (without QT) and the add-free Quicktime Alternative.

I believe iTunes, by default, adds a process to the startup list (like iTunesHelp or something). Just use MSconfig to remove it from startup. Like the iPodservice, iTunes works just fine without it.

Another iTunes alternative I just found out about today is Musikcube. It doesn't have all the features of iTunes, but works just as good for library organizing, is blazing fast, and uses about a 1/3 of the resources as iTunes.

It has nothing to do with tolerance. You don't need to be 'tolerant' of his preferences, as if they are somehow an offence to you. What you do need to learn is that not everyone likes everything just the way you do and telling people otherwise is not helpful advice.

I repeated what had been said because it's often helpful for an OP to hear the recommendation reinforced. That way they know it wasn't just one quack with a stupid idea.

He asked for advice, not Apple fellation. I gave the best advice so far in this thread. If you want an Apple circle-jerk, try the ipodlounge forums. Before you go, practice your d00dsp34k though, so as to fit in better ;)

Get over yourself. Your reading comprehension sucks....he wasn't asking for alternatives on thoughts on the best music software. Take your foobar fanboy attitude somewhere else.

As far as iTunes is concerned, there are 2 processes running that can easily be disabled without crippling iTunes.

I gave him a suggestion in a direction he may not have thought of - and an excellent one at that. You really need to calm down, stress isn't good for you. Steve Jobs doesn't need your help this badly.

PS - Foobar was just a random suggestion. I'd suggest anything - including RealPlayer - over itunes / QT.

Excellent? By who's standards? ....none other than your own. You're injecting an opinion into a very straight-forward thread with a simply question.

I'm not a Mac fanboy by any means and iTunes is less than perfect. It's a resource hog, but I do think it does have it's pros, such as dynamic playlists, library organization, and MP3 CD burning capabilities.

Regardless of how I feel about the program, I'm simply trying to help the OP with a question of which I know the answer. He may be a huge fan of iTunes, and more power to him.

Your original post was nothing more than trolling. More people like yourself seem to use this forum for their own personal soapbox. :|

If so, I doubt he needs your help to avoid my suggestion of different software. By all means though, keep it up. I think a vein in your forehead's about to burst and I don't want to miss the show :) Maybe you can even write your named in blood on your desk :D

Thanks for the advice so far (on the processes anyway). I'm not particularly keen on having to have Quicktime for iTunes 6 to work so.... anyone know where i can download version 5.0.1?

## Edit - no worries have found it now ##

Well to further stir the pot, I got my 11 yr old son (fairly computer literate but not an advanced user by any stretch of the term) a shuffle for xmas. As has been documented ad naseum it is a huge resource hog, and he has a somewhat older slower pc. Having seen the post for EAC to lame and use foobar etc discussions what would be the easiest set up for him that won't have me in there every night importing, sorting, and updating his shuffle?

Thanks for the help
