After swearing off ipods due to my hatred for itunes I caved and bought a refurbed nano. upon installing the latest itunes I was pretty impressed. Worked much smoother than I recalled. I moved over some of my music synced my nano and everything was going great. Then I attempted to sync a movie. I encoded a ripped DVD using the Videora ipod converter. It comes up and plays fine in itunes. Upon attempting to sync the movie it will freeze the whole program for a couple minutes and then say the disc cannot be found. I have done a few searches but have not able to come up with anything. Any ideas?

I am going to go ahead and assume that you are on Windows when doing this.

So, the movie is in the iTunes library, and when iTunes tries to sync it, iTunes freezes? Or is Videora somehow involved with the syncing process? I use my Mac for my iTunes stuff, and tend to not bother with videos on my iPod.

Finally, what format is the video in? What version of Nano do you have? 3rd Gen or 4th Gen? Are you certain that Videora works with whatever version of Nano that you have?

It is a 4th(well the latest) generation nano. Yes, I am on Windows 7. The video is in the library and will play in itunes itself. I am not at home but I believe it is .mp4 encoded in h.264. Videora is not involved in the syncing, it just encodes the video(I don't get along with handbrake). The 4th gen is a preset option in Videora.

Freezing is the best I can use. It doesn't crash but Itunes is unresponsive during this time. Then it will come back with the error message and the program is usable again.

Have you tried getting a free video off of iTunes Store and see if that will sync? Have you tried another of your ripped DVDs? Have you tried ripping the same DVD from scratch? What was the original format of the rip?

The original was just a straight, raw, rip. It is the only one I have tried, it was just for a test. Heck I don't even like the movie but I already had it ripped where I put it on my wife's zune so it was just for convenience sake. I'll try a video off itunes when I get home, I didn't even know they had free video's on there.

They always have a few free videos available. It might be a music video, or most all the movie trailers, a TV show pilot maybe. Usually it won't float your boat, but sometimes you find some gems.

Ipods used to be cool back in 2003.

Not in it for the cool factor, main reason is I want to try out Nike +. My main source of MP3's is from my phone, a Sprint Diamond. That said, I want full functionality of what I am paying for. Beyond that if I can find out what the deal and get this sorted I may convert. This has come a long way and is really slick. I am getting torn between this and mediamonkey.

As I mentioned above, I don't get along with handbrake. For whatever reason I can't encode a full movie without my system crashing. It'll pass prime and orthos but not handbrake, go figure.

I was just reading in Maximum PC today that iTunes does not play well at all with windows 7, especially when it comes to syncing. The article mentioned trying out disk mode.

still no luck. Here is the link of the error box I am getting. I removed the DVD and synced with just music fine. I downloaded a trailor from the itunes store and had the same issue. Thoughts?

I've had problems before with poorly encoding video files crashing/failing to sync before. IIRC, the solution was always a pain in the ass like running it through a different converter program and saving it as one of apple's more common video types. So that brings me to the questions...

How did you originally rip this movie? What file format is it in? Is it the exact same file that you use with the Zune?

I'm about 98% positive that this is not an iTunes/iPod issue and actually an encoding issue, but aphex's comment makes me think there could be a OS/software compatibility issue here.

The fact that it is failing with the video from the iTunes store makes me think that it is the OS issue.

OP: Are you running 7 64 or 7 32? Have you tried launching iTunes in Vista compatibility mode just to see what happens?

Its 7 64. Tried Vista compatabilty mode and no luck there either. I am very reluctant to reinstall the Vista to get this to work. Decisions Decisions.

Well, you are looking at a 64 bit Windows which to my understanding doesn't play very nicely with iTunes to begin with, and secondly you are using a beta OS. If there isn't a solution out there, then it is possible that one doesn't exist.

If it is an OS problem, I am certainly not blaming Apple. It is a beta OS and you have to expect issues and cannot blame other software vendors. That said I will likely reinstall Vista 64 tomorrow and it had better work. 64 bit is mainstream at this point and iTunes should fully support it.

Tell you what, let me try some of this at home on my desktop, I would have earlier, but I needed it booted into OS X for the past few days. I have both Vista64 and 7 64 installed on my desktop but have never synced my ipod with either. Let me try it on my 30GB iPod and see what happens. I just wish I had a 4G Nano on hand to try that as well. I would feel bad to buy one and then promptly return it just for this test.

Yes, mine does. I can honestly not recall if there was a 30GB before the video iPod, but both the 5 and 5.5G 30GB iPods can do Video.

I know that the video syncs just fine to mine since i have a movie or two and some TV shows on mine, I just never tested Windows.

Heh, I had the reply box open for about an hour before I realized I never submitted it, so I didn't see the response saying he had the problem with a proper video file.

Boomhower, here is what I found.

Installed iTunes64 in both 7 64 and Vista64, downloaded the same video in both, and synced it to my ipod.

No crashes or lockups that I could find. And the video played just fine.

However, this test is not conclusive given that I do not have the 4gen Nano.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I am moving all my info to my server and am going to reinstall vista tomorrow. Going by the error message I am leaning towards it being something with the ipod. We'll see.
