Sharing is great and all until I found out someone used a third-party utility to get around Apple's restrictions and milked some songs out of my iTunes share. I will never share again. 🙁

The latest version of iTunes lets you put a password on your share.

All versions that had sharing let you do that.

how did he find out he got milked. he on a school network?

i finally tried it, yea i was like wtf heh. i just checked off share on the main pc, installed itunes on another comp and right away on first use it already had the share displayed 😛 clicked in and immediately started playing music, searching the library etc without a hitch. i was all ready to configure stuff too lol🙂 good job apple. we've been trained to expect less i guess.

It was a coworker. I heard him playing some music that only I would have had on my iTunes share (I have some eclectic music tastes) and I didn't have my share up at the time. So I asked him about it and he used some program to get around Apple's sharing restriction of only streaming, no downloading.

ROFL this thread is hilarious.

I love my Ipod as much as the rest of the people who comprise the 85% of the MP3 marketshare.. its the best designed MP3 player on earth no doubt..

but this share music thing is no wonder of the world.. right click on any file folder in XP.. click on Sharing and Security.. ->Share Folder on the Network.

I'm glad Apple integrated it into Itunes but... 😕

The ability to share out playlists and have them refresh automatically is what I really like about it. There isn't a way to do it just using file sharing WITHOUT having to save, import, resave, reimport playlists all the time.

New user on your network? No need to have to add them to individual shares (even with GPOs it still takes a few minutes), just tell them to start up iTunes and they have access.

no kidding, we aren't that easily impressed. its not just sharing, but total easy access, you can browse through and instantly search through remote music collections in a snap. digging through windows explorer through hundreds of directories and such is not user friendly at all.

exactly. We use it here a LOT. Three PCs feeding off of each other (mine is wired and the other two are wireless) streaming lossless, and we can't get enough of it.

Also, hamachi make it that much better😉

and oh, i like how the new itunes version lets u minimize to system tray... FINALLY!!

Yeah, I just noticed that yesterday. Wish it was single-click to restore, but eh 😉 It also has an option to let you make the iTunes mini player (CTRL + M) be on top of other Windows when in mini mode. Handy!

Hey, just wanted to bump this thread and give props to Kaido. I tried iTunes sharing for the first time last night over a wireless connection and it was AWESOME! No sharing a folder, no permission setting, no mapping a drive, no in depth configuring the client's music library to point to the shared drive, none of that. Just enable sharing in iTunes, give it a name and BAM, any client on your network will pick it up when they launch iTunes. The Look for Shared Music box should be check by default on iTunes, but if it's not, check it and you'll have the entire music library that is on your host machine available to all clients on your network. Amazingly easy to set up, and works beautifully!
