iTunes music sharing = awesome!

I just got my wife an iMac for her birthday. Partially due to laziness, I didn't want to copy all of the iTunes music & movies over to her system. After doing some research, I discovered that iTunes has a sharing system for streaming music to other computers. I tried it out...and was shocked to see that it actually worked! First try no less! Here's the basics:

I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. My laptop is running Windows XP Pro and holds my music collection as well as my Lost TV shows from the iTunes video store. In iTunes go into Edit > Preferences and click on the Sharing tab. Check the "Share my music" box, give it a name, and click OK. That's it. That's all. You're done. I went over to the iMac, made sure that the "Look for Shared Music" box was checked in the Sharing menu, and voila, there it was. Amazing! No extra setup, no command line, no hours of troubleshooting...it just works. Both music and movies played fine over the wireless network (both computers are connected with 802.11g). Yay! Now I just need a Mac Mini to use as a server...

Props to Apple

Seriously though, that's pretty cool man.

I'm currently trying to figure out how to hook up file sharing to Apple's Front Row. This way you can buy a Mac Mini, hook it up to your TV, and stream music to your speakers and movies to your television. Front Row doesn't like to play shared libraries though. Ho-hum...

I don't know what planet your PC is from, but I've never had a one-click solution to file sharing EVER on my Windows machines, lol.

I think the fact that he actually found the option and was able to use it effectively says something. Say what you want about user incompetence, Apple makes user-friendly hardware and software. Yes many people can and will be able to do this using PC's, but that's not the point I'm making.

Anyways, (b^-^)b to Kaido.

I've always found secure filesharing on Windows machines to be somewhat difficult and stupid. I'm not a newbie at this; I run Linux servers professionally. All I'm saying is that it's nice to be able to check a box and have my machine share music wirelessly with my other machines. The fact that it was absolutely hassle-free speaks loads for Apple and their thoughts on consumer computing. Let's see other Linux and Windows computers do that 😛

Why do so many people unintentionally wipe their ipods clean with itunes' sync feature at its default setting then?

Sharing is great and all until I found out someone used a third-party utility to get around Apple's restrictions and milked some songs out of my iTunes share. I will never share again. 🙁

Tell me about it. This continually happened to my videos regardless of what options I checked regarding video syncing so I finally just disabled the junk.

It was cool, untill I started looking at all the $hit my coworkers listen to. Found a few "Men" with Abba,Flock of Seaguls,George Michael, etc in their library. I feel uncomfortable around them now, can't make eye contact.

Damn straight. I just set up a wireless router for the first time in Jan, and wanted to network my win2k laptop and xp desktop for the purpose of sharing files. I followed the tutorial here:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-update.asp#share
and got as far as here:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net-share-xp.asp
Not exactly a couple clicks away to get that far, but even then I had to give up b/c on this screen:
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/images/net-share-xp2.gif
my "network and security" options are greyed out so I couldn't get any farther. I tried the networking forums here but no help.
So consider yourself lucky!

The latest version of iTunes lets you put a password on your share.

ROFL this thread is hilarious.

I love my Ipod as much as the rest of the people who comprise the 85% of the MP3 marketshare.. its the best designed MP3 player on earth no doubt..

but this share music thing is no wonder of the world.. right click on any file folder in XP.. click on Sharing and Security.. ->Share Folder on the Network.

I'm glad Apple integrated it into Itunes but... 😕
