itunes is a stupid piece of software

was helping someone who got a new computer because their old computer died.

they had itunes on their old computer synced with their ipod

since the old computer died, all this person's songs were only on the ipod

they wanted to sync their ipod with itunes on their new computer

when i plugged the ipod into the old computer, itunes pops up a message about how the ipod is not associated with the current computer and would i like to link the library with the new computer

i said yes

well the new computer had a blank library, so the genius of a program itunes proceeds to overwrite the existing thousands of songs on the ipod with the blank itunes library on the new computer

in other words, itunes erased all the songs on the ipod with no warning or a very vague warning (it says something about replacing existing songs with those from the current library, but i assumed it would only replace those that were new or different. im used to things like: "warning all files on your ipod will be deleted"). who makes such a retarded program?

now im trying to get the songs back somehow. i ran Runtime Software's GetDataBack for FAT on the ipod via firewire and it seemed to find hundreds of files during the scanning process, but when it finished it only showed me a ton of blank folders and only 20mb worth of data.

any one have any ideas? considering this is not a bad hard drive, and the drive is running fat32, and basically nothing should have been overwritten, this should be pretty easy to recover... 🙁

correct me if i am wrong, but when you delete something on a mac, the file is erased, not prepared to be overwritten.....so i think the same holds true for ipods perhaps

yeah, the old HD is completely dead, some of the loudest dead hard drive click click clicking i have ever heard (i.e. it wont spin up at all). drive is currently in the freezer for a last attempt. also, both computers were Windows PCs, but i guess the ipod runs some version of a mac type OS?

im half way through another getdataback scan and it says "Files identified: 693 starts" and i see a long list of "File @ sector..." but when it finishes, i only see a couple dozen empty folders. how tantalizingly frustrating 🙁

wow nice one. Maybe you should use ephpod next time to take the music from teh ipod and load it onto the pc.

thats a very good guess, sicne its a product of the Apple_Collective... hehe 😛 Resisitance is Futile.
Sorry i just wanted to make a mac/borg joke.

To the real question... I believe the other post was correct... Since the OS doesn't work the same way dos/windows does with FAT where it says... oh ok this part of the HDD can now be used for something else... but if nothing does the data is still there.... the *nux underside of the mac accutlly securely ERASES a file on the HDD; effectively cleaning that part of the HDD not just saying "here is some space ifyou wan it."

help 🙁 are there any mac-like recovery programs that can get the data back? surely nothing is securely erased until u use dod standards 😛

sorry, can't help with the recovery.

Next time, if he doesn't want to use itunes or ephpod, winamp + the ipod plugin is pretty awsome. i use it to replace windows media player competely.

Right on, I hate that stupid software. Today I was trying to give my sister a song from my computer, and I couldn't figure out how that stupid crap works. Apple blows.

ml_ipod is a good plugin. Me and my dad have used it on my dads machine and its lightyears better than craptunes. Craptunes works well on my lappy though.

Well its your fault. If you did some research, you would know not to click yes. Never sync your Ipod with your library if you don't want bad things to happen...

i just have to rofl about the guy who complained about this being in the wrong forum and the moderator who moved it

lets see what i was asking about:

1. ipod
2. itunes
3. apple
4. data recovery

in everyone of those categories, i can find many more threads in general hardware than i can find in the software forum. but alas, inconsistency is always funny

ugh u twit you shoulda looked it up. you rushed and wiped out his data. heck its been written about in most mac magazines to boot. of course the program assumes you are trying to sync the pc to ipod instead of the otherway around. its not built to be a pirate software program. there are procedures to restore ipods data back to itunes, and all involve no saying yes to sycn when the sofware asks for it. once you do that you are doomed.

the correct procedure involves looking at the hidden folder in the ipod hd. same way you see any hidden folder in winblows or mac. you then simply drag and drop all the crud into the itunes window and it will restore all the itunes/ratings/playlists etc.

grumble. be more careful next time. and tell your friend to back stuff up. expensive lesson learned😛

Lol ouch. Yeah, itunes sucks. Unfortunately, for the 99% of computer users who don't know sh!t, everything else is too difficult to use and doesn't integrate CD ripping. Ran into this recently setting a new PC up for my cousin. I tried explaining how to rip a CD using EAC, create a new playlist for it in foobar and download the cover art from amazon... I got a glazed look I'll never forget - I think I even detected some anger in it :Q Anyway, I'm going to infect her PC with itunes next time I'm there so I don't have to deal with it anymore.

You don't need software to get the files off the iPod. It's recognized as a standard hard drive in windows. All you have to do is enable hidden file viewing and you can copy/paste the songs from the iPod. Unfortunately, the iPod puts your songs in anywhere from 10 to 100 folders and truncates the names so the files are not in original condition but the music is all there.

As to your dilemma, you lost your friends music. There's no way you're gonna get it back. You might be able to hire someone to do some forensic work on it but that will probably cost you a lot. Was his music irreplaceable? I assume most of what he had was illegaly downloaded because if he had the cd's, it wouldn't be a big deal. If he downloaded it on iTunes, then he's screwed. This is something that pisses me off about iTunes too. The songs you download should be tied to your iTunes account so you don't have to buy them again if you lose them.

as i said its all restored if you drag and drop the hidden files to itunes application window instead of trying to copy them manually
