iTunes going DRM-Free tomorrow?

Sure would be nice, though with Amazon currently rocking $.79/track on the popular ones, its gonna make it hard for me to fully switch back. Would definitely give it more of a look though, rather than now when I only use iTunes for browsing and Amazon for buying.

I wasnt going to come into this thread but i did anyway after seeing who posted

Just thought i would let you know

Probably not gonna happen, but it would be great if it does. Hopefully it applies retroactively as well.

What do you mean by retroactive? As in they will let you re-download all of your previous purchases, but this time in DRM-free ness? I seem to remember that when the iTunes Plus (the original DRM free stuff) came out they would let you upgrade your purchases to the DRM free (because it is also double the data rate at 256Kb) stuff for the price difference.

Being Canadian, I'd definitely welcome it since there are almost now DRM-free music stores here. iTunes Plus is the only one that carries any significant number of titles.

I moved to amazon because it's drm free. It would be the only way to get my business back.

I tried to use Amazon since their prices are competitive and they are DRM free, but the lst 3 tracks that I tried to buy wouldn't go through. It said my credit card was declined. I checked the info and spoke to customer service, but we couldn't find any problems. By the way, this is the same credit card that I used to buy those same tracks via iTunes Plus.

Have you purchased form amazon before? This sounds like an odd problem. I switched to Amazon the instant they had everything drm free. I love the integration of iTS, but DRM-free wins every time.

I concur with everyone else. While it is not a "when pigs fly" level of unlikeliness, it's none the less not something that seems bound to happen. The only way Apple can go DRM-free entirely is either to drop their DRM catalog, or renegotiate with all of the labels who refuse to drop DRM. And those labels won't want to drop DRM because they're trying to weaken Apple's abilities to control pricing by driving away Apple's business to other retailers (ex: customers like Sourceninja). iTunes will be DRM-free either when the labels give up their stupid campaign, or Apple is sufficiently weakened that the labels can once again control pricing.

I would prefer to use itunes. I love the interface, but I also listen to my music in more places then just my ipod and my mac. I want songs I can play on my linux workstation, my xbox, or my wife's verizon phone.

If apple did offer drm free high quailty (at least 256mp3 level quality) catalog with all the music I like I would switch back.

We'll see how this turns out. My one gripe with iTunes Plus is that they aren't mp3, or a standard. So even though I can do what I want with those music tracks, I can't always listen to them on any device I want. So I doubt that this transition would make me start buying from iTunes again.

AAC-LC in a MP4 container. That's a very real standard.

I understand that.. but it still doesn't completely work across all my devices. PS3 says it supports it, but I've downloaded tracks that simply will not play on my PS3 from the iTunes store (that are iTunes Plus tracks). I contact Apple and they basically say tough luck.. so I will not, and do not, buy from iTunes anymore.

This usually happens when you enter some info in incorrectly. Amazon has been flawless for me, and I notice that it even downloads as fast as itunes. It's not the property rights part of the DRM on itunes that bugs me. Its the limit they put on the amount of times I can burn a song to a cd. If I want to make 20 different playlists on cds that all include a song I bought from the itunes store, I should be able to do so.

That would be a problem with the PS3 being non compliant then, not iTunes. All of the iTunes tracks are standards complaint as much as anything can be. Ultimately everyone is going to have to get their butts in gear, everything is going AAC since it's more efficient than, easier to license than, and standards better defined than MP3.

Though I can certainly understand why you'd want to avoid the compatibility issues for now, since none of that is your fault.

As a follow-up. I have shopped with Amazon before, and have used 1-click before, it just doesn't seem to work with MP3 downloads. I do not know why. I have even deleted and then re-added my credit card, and 1-click still only works for things other than mp3s.

I one click mp3's all the time. You have to use their downloader app to do one click on mp3's. But I like their downloader, it downloads the mp3, then adds it to itunes.

I have the downloader, it doesn't work when I actually try to purchase. The test track downloaded fine, so that isn't the problem.

But whatever, a wider selection if iTunes plus will make me happy.
