I have iTunes 8 running fine, but I can't install 2.1 for my touch. I downloaded it fine, it did the backup/install/verify/reboot fine, but it was still at 2.0.2. iTunes says there's new software available, but when I try to download it it give me an error saying that the resource is not available.

No.. people are so dumb.. why do that have to do that in Terminal?

Just click on "View/View Options", or press CMD+J, and uncheck "Genre".. VOILA! It's off.

i don't like how it scrolls too much when in album grid view. it should only scroll to the next row of albums not skipping several rows. i like the idea but not the scrolling. booo....

and genius sidebar is meh, it doesn't work on most of my songs which are foreign songs.

new visualizer is nice though.

Oh, so you're talking about when you go to "View/Show Browser".

Can I ask what the point of turning it off is, just for my curiosity? It looks like it allows you to bypass it by just selecting "All Genres".

I just submitted feedback to Apple about the seemingly needless changes they made to iTunes 8. If you use Genres when you are browsing, awesome and good for you. However, in my experience, at least half of them are listed wrong and really, I don't even care anyways. Just let me turn it off. Can't be that hard if someone figured out how to do it in Terminal within an hour of release!

First thing I did was use terminal to turn it off on my Macbook. Vista machine? No such luck yet and it's driving me crazy!

Genius is pretty impressive and iTunes 8 as a whole seems solid. Just let me turn off the arrows and genres!

And for the love of anything you consider holy.... Where's mini player?!? HELP!!!

That. I personally hate "genre" because stuff is misplaced all the time, and really, to me it doesn't matter. If I like it, I'll listen to it. I don't want wasted screen real estate having to scroll.

And frankly, why was there a reason to remove the option.. it was a single checkbox.

I installed it, and now it won't backup my damn phone.:|

I uninstalled it, and moved it to my other drive, and learned it didn't fully uninstall version 7, because it still had all of my settings, & not the defaults.

Does anyone know how to fully remove itunes?

MacNN is listing a story where people are reporting issues with iTunes 8 and Airport Express (Airtunes): link

I use this a lot, so because of this I have not yet installed iTunes 8.

for window users: (to get rid of genre in the browse list and itunes store arrows)

iTunes 8 - Hide Genre in browser/iTunes store links on Windows

iTunes 8 was released today (well yesterday, but who?s counting?) with new features like Genius sidebar/playlists, HD TV show and a new visualiser. (wow :rolleyes: )

However, they have removed two of the UI options I used, namely hiding the genre in the browser and links to the iTunes store. I don?t find browsing by genre useful; only a handful of my songs have genre tags. I?ve never thought to myself ?Self, I really wish I could browse for a specific genre.? Add to that you are limited add one genre to a particular song and for me at least they are completely pointless (tags, on the other hand, would be awesome ;) )

Searching Google, there are solutions for both of these issues, but they are Mac only :hmm: . However, I?ve found the solution for Windows (which works for me anyway).

1. Ensure iTunes is not open. Browse to the iTunes Application Data folder (C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes on XP, C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes on Vista, substituting the drive letter and the user profile name where necessary.
2. Backup and open the iTunesPrefs.xml with a half decent text editor (ie not Notepad, my personal preference is Notepad++)
3. Find the User Preferences key, and below the <dict> tag insert:
<key>show-genre-when-browsing</key>
<data>
AA==
</data>

to disable the genre column in the browser, and:
<key>show-store-arrow-links</key>
<data>
AA==
</data>

to disable the links to the store.
4. Start iTunes.

To get back either the genre column or the store links, just remove the respective key.

Yea, I understand. I don't know. Some of the things Apple does strikes me as just strange.
