Why it is so popular? I got iPhone last week and decided to try iTunes to sync some stuff but I am not able to find sync option and the navigation/inferace is hard to use. Help is not helping me.

It's not that it's popular. It's the fact that you need to use it to sync to your iphone. All the sync settings are under the devices tab. Just click on your iPhone in itunes and everything is there.

Click the iPhone on the left and it will show "sync". There are also iTunes alternatives for iPods I am not sure if they work with the iPhone. Google for some there are a few.

For example:
CopyTransManager http://www.copytrans.net/copytransmanager.php
iPhone PC Suite

Again I am not sure if they work with the iPhone and if it has to be jailbroken (which voids your warranty).

I dont see iphone listed on itunes under devices tab

thank you so much mrchad I feel like I am idiot because i didnt know charging cable is really usb cable so all I did was unplug from plug adaptor and plug in usb port it worked fine.
