My soundcard (SB Audigy Gamer) supports 24bit audio and sample rates up to 192kHz but if I select anything other than a rate of 44.1kHz and a size of 16bit it sounds like iTunes is trying to kill my speakers.

Scratch that... It is just the 24bit audio selection that is killing it.

fwiw, I have to change it to 16bit for it to play correctly.
