It's yucky to be poor at Christmas

Is there something wrong with me? I'm broke this year, so I'm not spending very much on Christmas.

No, we're not going to Europe or Hawaii or skiing in Wyoming. No, I didn't spend a fortune on presents. No, I can't afford to fix my busted car for a couple weeks until I get some money (so the brakes are going to squeak for a while - I'm told they aren't completely unsafe yet). No, we're not having a big dinner, and we're not going out to a fancy restaurant. No, I didn't splurge on a big screen TV to watch football. No, I didn't get a big tree and I didn't spend a lot of time and money decorating.

No, we're not destitute, just low on funds. We're fine, and I don't think we need to spend a lot just because it's the holiday.

And, I'm really happy for other people who are celebrating whatever way they want.

So, why are so many idiots giving me a hard time because I'm staying within my budget and having a good, but modest, celebration with just family and friends on my own terms?

Merry Christmas.

People think that you have to spend a lot of money to have a good holiday, while this is not the case. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what you are doing, and it sounds like you're having a good holiday. It's all what makes you happy.

I'm having the same problem and my finances will be out of whack for the next three months b/c of it. I really hope I don't have any more "sh!t happens" moments or I'll be in trouble.

Because most people live outside of their means.

Just be glad you won't have tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt when you want to retire, unlike most other schmucks out there.

Because many people are shallow and associate Christmas with getting big, new, expensive things instead of just reflecting on the simpler things in life: spending time with the family.

Because they're idiots. Do whatever is right for you and your family. Merry Christmas.

The free spending ways are coming to an end, people have pretty much sucked all the equity out of their homes, and bankruptcy laws have changed, next year is going to be brutal for some people.

Because they are the people that have big debts and CC bills.

So how come your low on funds at xmas if you don't mind me asking?

Your definately right you don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun. Sure you could have more fun 'sometimes' if you had more money but it is not essential.

Isn't There Anyone Who Knows What Christmas is All About?

The best explanation I ever heard was the one Linus gave to Charlie Brown...

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them,

Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
and to all the non-christians and athiests, a non-offensive secular good luck and happiness to you too message

yeap i agree. We are on a budget this year. So we only got the kids (12 and under) gifts. So we didnt get my or my wife's parents anything. Well my wife was all worried that they were going to be mad at us because we didnt get themanything. The only person taht was mad at us for not getting them anything was my wife's younger siste (13). but i did promise to take her shopping when i get my tax's back.

i got my wife some body lotion and bubble bath. she got me a bears hat a Cubs shirt for a total of $12 . though we went crazy and spent like $200 on my daughter. sigh

OH I see.

<- England = NHS = slow service but you do 'eventually' get around to it.

I have been paying to see a Chiro as the NHS is poor at times 🙁. I've spent ~ $500. That would have been REALLY nice to not spend. But at least now the treatments are once a fortnight instead of twice a week.

Some people equate the joy of Christmas to the number on the reciept.
Others equate the joy of Christmas to family, friends and spending time with them.

Who has a better Christmas? My kids got 3 or 4 presents apiece. Such is life. But we're spending time with the family, and thats what really counts.

As to the brakes, they will be fine when they squeel. But only for a while. You will eventually wear through the pad and have metal on metal. You'll definately know it when it happens, because it GRINDS. That and its damned expensive to fix, as you end up replacing rotors and brakes instead of just replacing brake pads.
In short, you can go a while with the squeeler doin its thing, but there comes a time when the price to get it fixed suddenly becomes much more expensive.

Dont ask me how I know this.

Don't sweat it, just remember that for everyone out there that takes every opportunity to display some evidence of a big purchase to others, there are a million things they DON'T have, including products, or just spending time with family around the holidays instead of being out trying to buy impressive gifts. This year I was lucky to get to see my sister, it means more to me than any present she may or may not give me.

Could be worse, your wife could be having a baby in a manger that you know isn't yours because she's never given you any! Yeah right, God banged you, you think I'm some kind of putz???

I wish I could have a Christmas on my own terms...

1 - Stay home, do aboslutely nothing...

2 - No church

3 - No Christmas Tree or Decorations

Because you are a consumer. If you don't SPEND SPEND SPEND, then there must be something wrong with you. Off to the asylum you go!
