You're crazy then

we're all biased toward the car we own. I own a VW and I love it. IIRC you own a subie and hence you like the subie over a VW. Personally I like VW's interior and exterior better than a subie. Im not saying subies are bad cars, but I like VWs better

WHen the turbo goes out on your GTi (will happen before 50,000 miles) and the cheapest you can get it fixed for is $1000, then come back to us and tell us again how much you love it

Two totally different classes of cars though, I don't understand it. Plus I think the WRx has gone fuglified lately. Although I'm still not sold on VW's reliability.

That's like saying "I'm still not sold on dirt's cleaning ability"

VW does have a bad rep in the reliability dept. But the problems started when they moved the manufacturing plants to Mexico. All German built VWs have very little problems (in par with other car makers). My German built VR6 has had zero problems.

VW is aware of their bad-rep and they're trying to turn it around. The MkV Golf/GTI/Jetta and the B6 Passats are supposed to be vastly superior over previous models in terms of reliability

Sorry, but if I didn't know the lead mechanic and 2 others at the same VW dealership, then maybe you could sell me on that. I've known enough people that owned them as well, to know that your simply lucky to have had no problems. You are the minority

We've owned about 3 or 4 subarus in our family and we've never had a problem with one of them. I love subarus. AWD is a nice feature as well

Actually MB is the most unreliable carmaker right now according to latest consumer reports

My dad had a VW Passat and one of my friends has a Jetta...I will never ever buy a VW.

My dad's car used to randomly turn off for no apparent reason... i.e. BSOD. which complete loss of power steering and braking. In order to get the car back on you had to remove the key from the ignition (so the steering wheel locks) and then re-insert the key and turn the car back on. Have fun doing that on the 10 freeway in LA at 65 mph. My dad had to sue VW to get them take the car back (they never could fix it).

My friends car did the same thing...finally VW fixed the problem.

IME...VW == death trap

A) my GTI has 116K miles on it right now. still running strong
B) my GTI is a VR6. VR6 = NA. NA = no turbo
C) proof of turbo going out on a 1.8T? Never heard that one before

so STFU n00b

The only real issues the 1.8T had was the coil packs popping. Even *IF* the turbo crapped out "before 50K" it'd be covered under the powertrain warranty for free.

Somebody is speaking out of their ass.

Almost every Japanese manufacturer is more reliable then Subaru.

I don't know where you got your Subaru is second info from, but I can assure you that Toyota and Honda are too close for one or the other to be better, and that Nissan and Mazda are also more reliable then Sub.

This is how the list would go in my experience, this is experience with lots of cars - and many friends that I know who work as mechanics. I trust mine, and others experience a lot more then JD Power.

Honda (and Acura)
Toyota (and Lexus)
Nissan (and Infiniti)
Mazda
Subaru
Mitsubishi

I'd agree that MB and BMW are both just as bad, perhaps worse. But Consumer Reports means nothing, and thats also because french cars aren't sold in America. French cars are by far the worst reliability wise, namely Raunault

This same thing actually happened to my friends mom, which BTW happened 2 months after she bought it. Brand new VW Beatle

I didn't know you had a VR6 when I posted that.

Still, your the minority. And like I said, I know people who work at the MOFVCKING dealership as mechanics. I guess the fact that EVERYBODY who works as a mechanic for that VW dealership wouldn't touch a VW means nothing? Whereas the people I know who work for Honda as mechanics actually DRIVE Honda's.

regardless, you still pretty much pwned yourself when you said it would cost $1000 when the turbo dies prior to 50K miles, especially when VW warranty would cover that and it wouldnt cost the owner anything. Now had you said turbo would go out after warranty exprired, the pwnage would have been less. im ignoring the fact that I've never heard of a turbo dying on a 1.8T..

yes i know im in the minority and i have stated that before. I never said VWs are the best cars ever. I believe my 2000 GTI hasnt had any major issues is because it was built in Germany. It seems most of the major problems started coming up after VW moved their manufacturing plant to Mexico. And Ive said that VW is aware of the bad rep and they supposedly have fixed it with their latest generations. I say supposedly because only time will tell

VW styling FAR exceeds ANY subaru. ATOT definitely gives VW the cold shoulder... Unjustifiably, in my opinion.

ROFL, I love it when ad agencies go directly for a competitor's throat. Like when Dell ran that ad in the Journal targeting BestBuy, saying "we love the customers you don't want" when BestBuy issued a press release saying they're gonna crack down on bargainhunters getting deals of the Internet.

I had a 1992 Subaru SVX. Man that thing was a tank and I loved that car. It was sexy and rock solid. Haha I remember once I realized I had an oil leak and freaked out to check the oil, well it was bone dry and I had to dump 5 liters in before it was back up to where it should have been :Q ! I thought after that i was screwed and any day it was dead. Well it kept going as strong as ever. Man I beat the crap out of that thing and it just wouldn't die, what a great car.

Now I own a 2001 VW jetta, and yes it does have it's quirks that scared me to death when I first bought it, now I realize that anytime I have a minor problem (such as the automatic windows won't keep rolling up once I let go of the button) all I have to do is give her a reboot; unplug the battery for 10 minutes and bam, she's as good as new.

Agreed. I think, however, they aim for different markets. I wonder how something like the Dodge Caliber would stack up against a Subaru for instance? If anything its a heck of a lot more stylish...a buddy of mine said its got speakers that hang out the back for tailgating and stuff too. Get a Caliber with the Subaru SUV and do a little drag racing.......

From Consumer Reports:

SMALL CARS: Toyota Echo, Honda Civic (2005), Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid (2005), Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza (non-turbo)

SMALL SUVS: Toyota RAV4 (2005), Honda CR-V, Honda Element, Subaru Forester, Mercury Mariner*, Mitsubishi Outlander

So Subaru is third place, behind Toyota and Honda, no 2nd like I said. If you think Nissan and Mazda are more reliable than Subaru you are smoking crack.

I've owned both.
I owned a moded 95 gti vr6 and an impreza 2.5ts.

I've had less problems with the subaru than the VW in the same amount of miles. I had approximatley 4 totally disabling problems with my gti in the 100K miles I drove it. With the subaru I have had zero so far (had to put brakes on all four sides once so far).

The problems I had with the VW was kind of stupid crap. The coil pack went, the ECU totally died, the transmission had a problem where I couldn't get into reverse and then there was the problem where the entire car would just shutoff while I was driving (which was related to the ECU dieing).

Overall I still loved the car and would consider owning another one, but not for my primary work car.
