It's time to upgrade my video card

Well it looks like my Gainward FX 5900xt is shot and I need to replace the card, and I was hoping I could get some advice from some people on which brand I should go for right now.

I have a tyan Tiger K8WS with an Opteron 146 on it, and 2 512MB sticks Of Corsair XMS pc3200 400mhz RAM.

I was wondering which brand goes better with my current setup? ATI or nvidia? I'm looking for a midrange card, and the 6600 GT looks like some sweet stuff, but I'm not sure if nvidia cards are are the way to go after my last card's incident. I know the X800 uses way less power than a nvidia card, so I wouldn't need to devote a whole rail from the PS just to the X800 ... but I'm just not sure.

I think I'm rambling. Can anyone throw some advice or point my in the right direction?

What price range?

The 6600GTs are a good deal if you can get one <$230. You can look for a used 9800 Pro for $150-$170 on these boards. I picked up my X800 Pro for $300 shipped from the FS boards. Great card if you can find a deal on one.

I agree with you on the 6600 GT's, I can find them on Newegg for under 200 bucks for the ones with PCI-E, but the ones with the AGP 8X I need are all over $230. Does anyone think that we'll see some price droppage after Christmas on all these?

It's just low supply and high demand. If you can sit tight for a month I'm sure they will come down to $200. If you are like me you can't wait 🙂

If you can get the BFG 6800 OC from Outpost.com for $250 that is a good deal. It comes with Far cry also, but they have been out of stock the past few days. When they come back in stock, if they are still at $250 i think that is what i am going to do. Alot of people have been able to softmod them from 12 to 16 pipes and 5 to 6 vertex shapers. They are supposed to OC pretty goos also.
