It's time to start planning my new stereo

'05 Tundra access cab. It has two front door speakers, two back door speakers and two front door tweeters from the factory (and a tape/CD combo..wtf). I'd like to get a head unit that fits the full double-DIN dash; I'm debating whether or not I want nav. It would be nice..probably depends on what kind of deal I can find.

My main concern is bass- I don't need anything crazy, but my MR2 has 6.5" Polk Audio components and a 5.25" OEM-replacement subwoofer and it's not enough (though mid/high is awesome). Problem is with the access cab, I really don't know where I can put a subwoofer without sacrificing interior space...probably won't be able to get that worked out to my satisfaction. 🙁

Any ideas? I'd like to keep the whole thing under $1k, but that's flexible.

Are youwillingto sacrifice some bed space? put the enclosure in the bed and put the opening into your cab 🙂

Here is one premaid enclosure for two 8's. Without seeing the truck it's kind of hard to tell what's going on but it looks like they are going under the rear seat. They are not the cheapest in the world but would likely be the easiest.
Well whaddyaknow...that would be perfect. Thanks man!

Good idea, but no- need room for toolbox and snowmobile, plus I don't want to cut into the body.

$1500 at Crutchfield so far...yeesh. I need to find a used amp and start scouring the internet for deals. They have Rockford Fosgate 8" subs b1g1 now, though..hrm.

don't have a window in the back glass?
Yes, but I'm not seeing how that would help..?

don't buy from crutchfield. maybe your HU, if it's not too overpriced, since they will provide install support for you. but there is no way you want to buy amps or drivers from them.

that q-logic enclosure seems pretty overpriced. .35cf per sub sealed is enough for some decent 8's, though. just don't expect anything too crazy.

even if you spend $500 on a headunit, you should be able to get a set of decent comps, a couple small subs, and a 4ch amp (though a 2ch and a monoblock would be cheaper if you have the room) for the remaining 500.

RF subs for half price at crutchfield means they're basically about the same price you'd find them anywhere else on the internet. and that's still too much.

You're right there, they are expensive. I think I bought my MR2's components there, but they were 50% off or something. My last amp I bought of FS/T and head unit from a guy on a truck forum. I like to put everything together at CF just to make sure it all fits, though. Once I figure out what I want, I will start hunting elsewhere. 🙂

I don't need anything crazy for bass - I'm just looking for the bottom half of my music. Somehow it's gone missing. 😛

The enclosure is for two 8" subs - wouldn't I want a 2ch for that as well, or could I drive it off a single amp (assuming they're both running off the subwoofer pre-out, obviously don't need fade/etc for the individual subs)?

no, you don't want a 2ch for your subs. you don't want subs to play in stereo- if you use a 2ch, you'll want two dual 4ohm subs so you can run them series/parallel with the amp's channels bridged. considering a couple decent 8's could handle 300-400w or more, it will probably be cheaper to get a monoblock than a big 2ch.

🙁

jlee, my dad has a 2005 stepside accesscab that he recently put a new system in, but he did an OEM integration setup with the stock nav. We built a .5cu ft sealed enclosure to physically replace the rear bench armrest, using some small highfonics amp under the bench and an eD SQ10 shallowmount sub. I don't have any pictures, but i can get you some if you're interested. It sounds great, and would be significantly easier to implement if you're using a new HU.

That would be awesome, thanks! Did you remove the entire armrest and bolt the box to the back of the truck..?

Another option would be to replace the HU sooner than later, so at least I have a decent HU (and line-in for music...FM transmitters suck) and then do the rest of the system later.

if you can remove the armrest and build a box for a ten (or twelve), that would be my recommendation.

a couple of eights would be around the same output, but they lack proper low-end extension. and don't let anyone tell you that eights are 'tighter' or 'faster,' as that's a complete fallacy. cone size does not dictate transient response.

I had a 12" in my first car and it was perfect. It wasn't obnoxious but it sounded great in the car. I don't think a 10 will even come close to fitting in the armrest, though. I wonder if I could make a box for a single ten under the passenger seat (where q logic puts two 8's)..

Yeah, the box is bolted to either the seat or the back of the cab box, i don't recall. I'll request some pictures from him.

I currently have a sealed 12 in my car @ about 500w. It hits low, smooth, and hard...i love how it sounds, but something that big just wasn't an option for the tundra. The sub has a 6.5" mounting depth and the enclosure is 1.6cu ft.

we used this sub for the tundra: http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_21&products_id=106 but from the sounds of it you may be looking for a more poWar.

How about the upcoming Stereo Integrity BM mkIII for your sub? It has a 3.5" mounting depth and SI recommends only a 0.5cu ft. box for it. Reviews of the preproduction version have been very positive.

There's currently a preorder group buy on them for $175 + shipping for each (normal price is $270 or something like that) going on until the end of this month. I heard about this on a different forum and placed an order for one for my Escape. Send an e-mail to Nick@stereointegrity.com with your address if you are interested. The preorder uses PayPal at the same address if you decide to bite.
