I think that sums up your attitude quite nicely

People buy things like paper, backpacks, etc and donate them to the churches to hand out. This year the local church had car loads of stuff people bought and donated.

My church does the same. It specifically supports the elementary, middle, and high school that is close by because the area is full of low-income kids, kids living in extended stay hotels, etc. One of the rooms was full of backpacks, notebooks, paper, etc.

It needs to be abolished completely. The private sector will pull through.

Wow just... Wow. They would have been better off sending out 200 per child to non-welfare recipients.

Well in some states they do .
In NC I went a few days ago to the medicaid office with a friend. The place was packed. Many small children and only room to stand. Almost every person that returned the application were referred to another department called work first.

Here is their site:

Geez, they should give out prepaid credit cards that are good ONLY at grocery stores for groceries, and ONLY at school supply stores for school supplies etc.

School is pretty close to starting again and I'd imagine that a lot of people have already shelled out
for new shoes, pack packs and such. For many of these folks that extra money might well go towards
paying that utility bill they had to let go this month in order to do that.

There are bad apples in every bunch and I've no doubt that some will abuse this money but I also have no doubt that many more will
use it for clothing, shoes for their children.

wtf?! $200 per student? In the hands of parents who aren't good at managing their money? If they sent half that money to teachers specifically for supplies for students in their classrooms, those students would be much better off.

nice idea.. unfortunately it would cost even more money to set all that up
and get the pre-paid cards into people's hands in time for school opening.

I've been sitting on a huge amount of cash and have a prime location in a strip mall but I couldn't think of what type of business I wanted to run.

A school supply store!

Not sure about NY but there are plenty of stipulations on what food stamp cards can be used to purchase here but they get around them anyway. Spend 10 minutes in front of most Wallyworlds around here on the 1st and 15th and you will find someone who will actually go shopping with you and pay for your groceries with their cards for 50 cents on the dollar.

Geekbabe, Rochester stores and ATMs have run out of cash, they can't keep beer and smokes on the shelves. Walmart is out of flat screen TVs

This isn't a few, its wholesale fraud. We've never seen anything like this.

Exactly.

If they were trying to buy votes, why would they give the money to poor people? Poor people rarely vote. This is common knowledge.

Maybe in some places but they were shoehorning them into the voting booth last election.

Its so blatant that the state legislature said out front there would be NO reform despite the financial crisis. Even now Paterson is denying what's going on.

Because poor people are 2 to 3 times more likely to vote Democratic....this is common knowledge.

They were all just getting their piece of the $140 million pie. What's the problem?

My favorite quotes:

"It's free money"
"Thank God for Obama. He's looking out for us."

Its anecdotal but true nonetheless. I asked a guy who served in the State House for a few years why there was no mediciad reform even on the table. He laughed and said anyone who even mentioned it was smeared as a poor hating racist and destroyed politically.

That's why you can buy anything with no restrictions.

Hells yeah it will come back around to us eventually. I can't wait but I'm doing something more high society with my handout. Hookers and blow come to mind initially...
