It's throttle time on the Death Star

What, no threads about this story yet?

The almost inevitable prospect of this hitting "unlimited" Verizon plans soon has me re-reconsidering getting on the LTE train next month.

Everyone with a clue is desensitized to new "carriers screwing over consumers" stories at this point and stopped giving a rat's ass.

It's funny, because over in P&N I am reading about the outrage that Comcast cancels account after twice violating their cap in a 6 month span. Over there, most don't care if you throttle after a cap is reached. It's just strange how there are multiple ways to try to remedy the situation, yet no one likes any of them.

Cap OK, but not to 56k speeds. They are capping it to unusable speeds, just so they can get away with it. They are going to apply it to the grandfathered unlimited plans. This way they can still say it is unlimited because they didn't block your access. They just slowed it down to unusable speeds.

What are you going to do? Jump ship to another carrier? Haha! You think this a free market or something?

There are plenty of people admitting to using 20gb a month of wireless data. I don't blame AT&T. I have the 2gb plan and I've never used more than 500 megabytes in a month. Most months I use about 100 megabytes.

You probably shouldn't have a smartphone then, if your data use is that low. I pull between 2 and 3GB each month, and thats with little Pandora or Netflix.

sprint is still unlimited and won't throttle. that's the whole point, dump all your unprofitable customers to your competition

Sounds like a reasonable business strategy to me. AT&T is already on the bottom of the customer satisfaction numbers, its not like they can go much lower.

WTF would I use to check Facebook and play Angry Birds then genius? 🙄

Verizon and AT&T hate customers, we are nothing but meat with money to them.

Maybe someday people will wake up and fight back, but I'm not holding my breath.

TMO is just awesome. Yes, they throttle you after 5 or 6 and sometimes even 7 gigs but the data, at least for me, cost is the cheapest and their 3g and 4g speeds are pretty damn good, not to mention the decent phones. Looking forward to my sensation in a couple of months.

Hahahah what? I'm sorry, but that's inane. Someone shouldn't have a smartphone unless they're pulling large amounts of data? That doesn't make any sense at all.

Take my girlfriend for example. She's had a smartphone for a few years now - a G1, and now a G2. She averages about 150 MB a month. And yet, she uses the phone all the time. Sure, some of it could be done on a feature phone - a lot of texting and emailing - but she also uses maps/navigation, OneBusAway, Kindle, and hordes of games, which are pretty much smartphone staples.

Heavy data usage generally happens via streaming...and believe it or not, there's a lot more to a smartphone than the ability to stream media.

Hell, I only use about 1.5-2GB myself, and the vast majority of that is from SmartDJ mixes and tethering to my PlayBook to watch TV.

What are we citizens to do if we need cell and data service? The telecom sector is a pseudo competitive market offering no real choice for consumers. Until telecom lobbyists are rendered inconsequential and government breaks up this effectively collusive sector, we are stuck with it.

No threads because AT&T has been throttling all of its other broadband services since inception. Not only that, but the use of DPI on your traffic tells a lot about you.

What should you expect from a company that had an illegal backroom for government spying? Have you ever heard of Lawful Intrusion? It is built into the cellular hardware. Ok with that?

What exactly do you use it for?

Do you just stare at your phone all day?

I pull only 300-600 megs a month on a BB and I need it more than you. I use it mostly to stream stock quotes and make trades during business hours.

For fun I read manga use Google Talk
