It's the weirdest thing ... Windows Explorer stops working?

This is the weirdest thing I've seen with any version of Windows in a long time. The situation is this:

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and I use an external 2 TB drive to store video files on. I open Windows Explorer and choose a number of files of various types (to include .avi, mp4, etc.) but when I choose click one particular file (an .mkv) Windows Explorer just craps out and informs me that "Windows Explorer has stopped working ... looking for a solution".

Any way I do it (choosing this file alone or in conjunction with others WE just craps out. Any ideas?

It sounds as if you have a codec related problem surrounding loading a thumbnail of the .mkv file into memory. If you have any codec packs installed, completely remove them, reinstall and try again.

Mine did that when I first installed W7, but I figured out it was due to a media player networking service or something like that. I disabled it and haven't had any problems since.

This seems to be the most plausible explanation. I would try his advice OP.
