stopping production for a few days is what a lot of companies do to slow down inventory piling up and to fix things. PC companies do it all the time.

You don't read the auto industry trade papers Tominator? Because if you did you'd realise the one week shutdowns at Chrysler are due toatlly due to mis-management from Daimler head office & nothing else.

Besides, you keep going on about how rational capitalism & market forces are, so you should just like it or lump it, ifn it means a bit less business for you. You could always stimulate business by cutting your charges, but then fuel prices are too high to do that - well that means that a percentage of truckies should then leave the business so the supply & demand curves intersect, & then the truckies that are left could charge a more profitable rate. That's what captalism is all about.

<< what ever you say Tom. >>

You feeling OK? ;)

DABANSHEE I'd only disagree that no one on management could forsee the drastic swing in oil prices. More than anything else the high prices of gasoline have led to the consumer stopping their spending spree on automobiles.

...Yet it is Clinton out taking credit for the economy.

The so-called 'Reagan Democrats' are mostly the Union and non-union workers that are taking careful stock of this situation. Most of the Folks in he plants I talk to that voted for Clinton won't have anything to do with Gore.

You know what Ford is doing in Australia to keep the demand up on their RWD straight-6 & V8 Falcons & LWB Fairlanes, Tom? They are offering them all with dual fuel petrol/LPG systems as a US$700 option. Now with the sedan version you lose about 15& to 20% of the trunk space because the LPG cylinder is built into the trunk on that ledge above the diff, up against the back of the rear seat. But one loses no trunk/storage space if one specifys dual fual on the wagon or Pickup versions as they have 3 parrallel longitudal LPG cylinders underneath the tray, so no storage space in lost, except for a little bit on the wagon as that has to then have its spare wheel positioned in a up-right position along the side, behind the left rear wheel arch. To make room the petrol tanks are slightly smaller too, but you still end up with a much longer range than the straight petrol verion (about 70% more).

They offer a dual fuel LPG/Petrol option as LPG costs arround 45% less than petrol (& 50% less than deisel) in Australia. Consently all taxis & many commercial vehicles in Australia are LPG fualed. As such virtually all servos now have LPG 'pumps' as well as petrol pumps in Australia.

Folks, none of the auto companies anticipated the spike in fuel prices. Chrysler is not the only one.

Chrysler's major problem is that it has an outdated line-up of vehicles. People just aren't buying Chrysler's cars.

One reason appears to be that management's attention was diverted by the combination with Daimler. It really is as simple as that. Stop trying to read a larger economic message into this. There is none. Prove it to yourselves by looking up the recent sales results for the other auto companies.

Tom, sorry for the circles but when people start off complaining about the media and then go off on poloitical tangents then I have to go in circles to keep up with them.:D

Take this sentence for example

If you think I really will get mad or return your flames, give it up

If you think that anything I have written was to make you mad or to flame you please point it out to me because at no point in any reply have I attempted to do either.

I've argued with much better than you...ask anyone.

You see Tom I think that's the problem here, you're looking for someone to argue with you on this reply and that's not my intention at all. My intention is to tell it as I've experienced it, your is to try and dispute and debunk my reality(thats how you start an argument).
Now if this thread was on anything other than politics I might have argued with you but I don't feel that politics is worth the blood pressure rise. ;)

And Semper_Fi I apologize, those 2 sentences do go together for you and Tom and anyone else who sees the economy crumbling now that Clinton is getting ready to leave office!:Q
And Semper_Fi if you're still in it's OK to not like the CIC(Com-in-Chief), Hell when I was in we didn't like the AIC(Actor-in-Chief) we had when I was in. You should be able to guess that one.:D

Gotta go and put a toilet in the bathroom.:disgust:

Later.:)

Russ, any large company worth their salt will have an ERP system in place that will let them close their books, end to end, at the end of every month within an average 5 days. How is that being months behind? Heck, I used to work at a large company and we were embarassed that it took us seven days to close our books, while some competitors took two days.

Anyhoo, macroeconomists don't use such piecemeal data. It's all in the big numbers.. :)

The nation's economy and measures of inflation have looked good on paper for quite sometime. Trouble I have with understanding the situation is why basic commodities have steadily increased at a pace not consistent with those reported and why some of our smaller manufacturing facilities (which are the life's blood of poor rural areas) have been going out of business.

Clinton once said that things economic can seem better than they really are, which is about the nearest thing to the truth that I've heard from him.

Tominator, I noticed that you emphasize nuclear as part of the solution to our energy problem. Assuming that you are right and given that nuclear is a NIMBY nightmare, it seems to me that only a liberal big, force the people to do what's best for them since they don't know themselves, kind of government has any chance getting nuclear going again. With a small restricted gov. there ain't no chance the people will allow it. It isn't just business that gets to do whatever it wants with gov. regulation out of the way.

Doesn't it depend on who is preventing nuclear power from becoming more common? From what I know, it's the far left wing enviro-wackos (Sierra Club, et al) who are against nuclear power. Seems to me that then a conservative, pro-business administration would be better to get that ball rolling.

Bober, my guess is that it's women who are to blame. They think about having genetically mutated children as the price to pay for nuclear profiteering, combined with common sense concerns about property values. I can get you some sweet deals on property in the Chernobyl district. I don't mind NP in your back yard; just don't build it here. Furthermore, Dodge vans don't run on electricity.

Also, you may have used the work 'wacko' where 'visionary' would have been more appropriate. It would make sense, from a disinterested point of view, that real looming environmental catastrophe would first be visible to those without an economic interest in source causes and familiarity, expertise, devotion, to the subject matter. Galileo knew what he knew because he was looking. Still, he was a wacko... for a while. Keep an opened mind.

Well take your pick. Die from smog of continuing to burn fossil fuels if you like. Doesn't matter to me, I'm going to die someday anyway and there isn't anything that I can do to stop it.

And vehicles will run on electricity, when fossil fuels dry up and there's a demand for it. It really is inevitable.

I suppose if you were king we'd all live in caves, eat nuts and berries, and burn bear crap to keep warm in the winter. Remind me not to visit you at your cave, I can't stand the smell of burning feces.

Come on, Bober, use your head. If I were king, you'd visit me whenever I said so, and while your cave might be heated by bear poop, mine would have the finest amenities.

I thought you had a beautiful little girl, so your death should not be the issue. The alternative to nuclear isn't fossil fuels. I never said that 'I' was personally opposed to nuclear power. I don't know enough to have a sound opinion. I have concerns about the integrity of the industry, and the wisdom of storing toxins with huge half lives. Here at least, I have an open, if suspicious mind.

<< I don't know enough to have a sound opinion. >>

Ah, now we're getting to the heart of the matter. When it comes down to it, nobody on this planet (not even little ole me) has enough information to have a big enough view of the world to understand how their actions affect the future.

It's that damn butterfly flapping it's wings in the rainforest I tell you. It's all his fault.

What's my point? Hell, I don't know. I just know I'm at the office on a Sunday afternoon trying to debug a program written by a guy that I fired several months ago for incompetence, and I'm avoiding the work. Apparently he didn't have enough information to write the damn thing correctly to begin with.

I never said the economy was crumbling. I do think we will have a down turn in the next 24 months though. No, I am not still in and everytime I see Clinton get off the chopper and give that wuss salute of his it makes me want to puke and I enjoy run-on sentences.

Eat the bumper off your truck? I missed that one earlier. :)
