it's stuff like this that makes me think John Petrucci is the most complete guitarist

you gotta watch all the lte vids.. if you watch kindred spirits and can tell me the solo at 2:30 has no emotion, then I'm going to discount anything you say about music from here on out.

Michael Angelo Batio is the one and only, truly complete guitarist. He can play equally well both left and right handed, on a quad neck guitar. That's like, 4 guitars.

I'm not a huge fan of insane speed shredding, but I am always impressed by Michael's ridiculous chops. I ran into him a couple years back at a NAMM show. For how good the guy is, he has absolutely no ego about his playing ability.

Ehh, I'm certain that Petrucci is a better player, but I prefer Akerfeldt or Steven Wilson, as I see them as better composers.

Meh, it's just 9 minutes of insane jamming with no lyrics. What's the point? Lyrics make rock music...unless you're a meth addict this "experiment" is full of fail.

that just sounded like a bunch of notes played fast. totally void of emotion and doesn't touch you at all.

here's a video worth watching

Agreed. Here's the same song with Petrucci: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtAnOuxp17c&feature=related
Excellent technical skills, but lacks the same emotion in the music. Gilmour can send chills through your body with his playing. I'm not trying to say that Petrucci isn't incredibly skilled, but he over relies on that skill without putting the emotion into it as well.

He did alright with it, but it was over played. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Brian May was on Fresh Air today (I had no idea the dude now has a PhD in Astrophysics! :awe🙂, but he's of the opinion that the only thing that matters in a song is the singer. He's not one for guitarists, apparently. :hmm:

Odd, I thought, as I've always felt otherwise....but he's been a bit spoiled, methinks. 😀

I'd be happy if all music was instrumental. Lyrics just get in the way of the instrument playing.

lolz. srv, clapton, knopfler, hendrix, atkins, bb, may, and gilmour are complete guitarists, not this fingertapping arpeggio i-wouldn't-know-a-melody-if-it-butfucked-me bullshit.

Fuck you. You make it sound like John Petrucci is conceited and implies his abilities make him better than the others you've described. He's a humble dude doing what he loves and is actually good at it. And what the fuck are you talking about him "not 'knowing' a melody." A melody is a series of musical notes which is perceived as a single entity. There's no reason to shit on a respected guitar player just because you have different (and might I add severely mainstream) taste.

If you used that description to describe David Gilmour, I would agree with you 🙂

Petrucci is an amazing guitarist, but there isn't anything unique to his writing or playing ability. He has incredible chops and tone, but there are a million other guitarists that have that too. Dream Theater's song writing, while extremely technical, has never had a lasting impression on me. I never got the Dream Theater hype and I consider myself a huge progressive rock fan.

This.
There's a difference between being technically skilled and musically skilled with guitar. Petrucci is pretty much just wankery. Not saying he's bad TECHNICALLY; he just doesn't know how to write without playing something really hard or fast.

you obviously don't know what you are talking about and just listed some famous guitarists. Petrucci does shred, but its for show. Give him a slow song and he can write some pretty haunting melodies.

Did you ever hear the Dream Theater 'queen' medley? Brian May actually posted about it on his blog and said it was the best Queen cover he's ever heard and it blew him away and that they were the best musicans he's ever heard...

aww...someone's butthurt. nowhere did i imply that he was conceited, nor would it would it make a difference if he donated his money to starving aids infested ethiopian kids. his music still sucks. seriously, it sounds like he randomly put notes in a midi generator as fast as he could. i don't shit on him because he's a good guitar player, i shit on him because he's not a good musician.

and there is a reason people like SRV are mainstream: because they're fucking good.
