Never ceases to amaze me that someone will find something wrong with a person/s helping others.

I make donations to Toys for Tots and several local orphanages every Christmas.

There is nothing wrong with people helping people. I just find the story ironic.

There's nothing "ironic" about it, except in your delusional, pseudo-intellectual mind. Just because the people are poor doesn't mean that it's because their "jobs were shipped overseas". Liberal tunnel vision.

Are you saying jobs haven't been shipped overseas? Or are you saying he is poor because he chooses to be poor?

Regardless, interesting position you have.

I'm saying you don't know why they are poor, and instead of taking the story for what it is feel you need to inject your BS politics into it, and that's pathetic.

But I have a pretty good idea where the toys are coming from. ;)

Nobody asked you to see this story in this way. I brought it up because I see irony in a man on his last legs getting some good holiday warmth in the form of Chinese plastic.

Just trying to elevate the conversation.

We see unemployable americans who have no job prospects and are almost destitute using the very last of their money to give even more to china?

We see other Americans step in and send the money to china for them?

You think this is a rosy picture?

Why does the story need elevated?? You were not trying to do no such thing -- your just a freakin idiot!!

The story is what it is...a fantastic story about some people whop have money paying of those peoples K Mart layaway bills that might not have the money!!

Only a freakin idiot would attempt to down play this story!!

loliberals you think slave wage jobs being shipped overseas is a bad thing. You really think some fat American redneck is willing to work at a toy factory 12 hours a day making $3/hr?

You're just upset our Federal Government didn't think of this first and then create some sort of new entitlement program to repeat it every year.

I can see it now... Reid and Pelosi's long overdue 2011 Save America's New Toys Act!

you're such an ass.

Leave it to ATOTP&N to find some douche to politicize and denigrate human compassion when it's needed most.

You ain't kidding..... holy jeebus. Only a crowd as cynical as the AT forums could turn a good story like that posted by the OP into a discussion about outsourced jobs, the 1% vs 99% bullshit and chinese plastic.

Ya, these nice acts still happen and it's important to give them attention.

I don't think jstorm intended as much nasty as is being taken from his initial post.

We have on P&N precisely 287,928,836 threads about outsourcing of jobs, China, etc... and, counting this thread, 1 thread about news of people helping out other people.

To claim or say that it's an issue no one wants to or ever does think about is, frankly, just plain idiotic.

Just trying to elevate the conversation.

Not even close.

We see unemployable americans who have no job prospects and are almost destitute using the very last of their money to give even more to china?
Dona Bremser, an Omaha nurse, was at work when a Kmart employee called
Other than that, we are given no info about the work status of these people. Nursing is a pretty low-wage job, right? Nice of you to infer that they are all unemployable pieces of shit, however.

Carter, a mother of eight from Grand Rapids, Mich., said she cried upon hearing the news. She and her family have been struggling as she seeks a full-time job.
...
Angie Torres, a stay-at-home mother of four children under the age of 8,
...
The young father stood in line at the Kmart layaway counter, wearing dirty clothes and worn-out boots. With him were three small children.
Seems to me the overall theme is "people with too many kids". Why didn't you choose to infer that? If I have 8 kids, does that suddenly make me more employable? Does it cause my income to go up? Does the price of food and toys go down?

Why don't you drop your little freshman-in-college politics thought-process and just accept this as a nice story about generous people willing to spend their own money (I know, I know, none of them earned it in the first place) to help others? While you and your friends are parading around championing the plight of the lower class, others are taking action to help. That's what you seem to never understand.

Thanks for posting this story. I have had a couple hundred dollars of traveler's checks sitting in a drawer for years. I cashed them in Saturday morning at the bank. I went to WalMart this evening and talked with the Customer Service Manager on duty only to find out that they had closed down their layaway last Friday. I asked if there were any accounts that were not paid off and she said their were some. After talking with the store manager she called a lady in the back and I met her. She told me that although layaway was technically closed they still had the trailers out back with the unclaimed items.....hoping that the people would come in by Christmas and they would still honor the accounts. If not these people would not only not have toys for their kids on Christmas but they would also loose their down payment and layway fee. The lady found me two accounts, one for a little boy, and one for a little girl and I made sure those kids will have a Christmas this year.

My girlfriend was with me. She told me of a guy that works with her that has two small children, one with medical issues, and a wife that cannot work due to medical issues and he is so strapped this year that his kids were not going to have Christmas. We drove out to his place and I gave her $100 of the money to give to him as long as she would never tell him it was from me.

Now THAT is the real meaning of Christmas!! /thumbsup

Liberals (and progressives especially) will find nothing good in this story because it means that private citizens are, indeed, taking up charity to provide for people who need it. It means that the government sponsored toy-buying programs are superfluous and their long-soughtafter nanny state isn't necessary.

In general, though, I don't agree with layaway in this situation. Though I do applaud those who are stepping up and helping.

Yes, in the mind of a modern liberal or progressive the only effective social safety nets that can or do exist come from government programs.

This example, which is far from isolated, thoroughly refutes that belief.

As vehemently non-religious as I am, I definitely recognize and applaud all the work done by various religious charities.
